@erinbaderin: ugh, DH :bummed: The rope swing came today, and he was like, "ok, so you really want to hang this from the steel beam? Because we'd have to cut a 12" by 12" hole in the ceiling so that there's room for it to swing." WTF, dude. Maybe you should have led with that. And he seemed annoyed that that was the plan. I was like, that was your idea and you didn't mention a huge hole! So moral of the story is, screw stuff into the joists.

@erinbaderin: If you can find the joists in the ceiling, you can hang things into those. To be honest, I'm sure there's lots of info online about how to do that, but DH is an architect, so I have no idea myself. I just leave it up to him. :) The other option, and what we're doing, is to hang it from the metal beam that runs the length of the ceiling in our basement (the beam that essentially holds up the house). You can see it outside of the wall/ceiling in the laundry room. So DH is going to cut a small hole in the ceiling and hang it from the metal beam. It's easier since we don't have to find the joists and don't have to screw the swing into anything. Sorry, I feel like this is sort of a non-answer.

@Chuckles: How do you plan to hang this? We have a basement playroom and a kid who's part monkey and this toy, but how to combine? This is a bit of a thread-jack but we watched The Home Edit on Netflix and they did Neil Patrick Harris' basement playroom and he'd hung eyehooks spaced at intervals all over his basement so he could hang things from the ceiling and we've been trying to figure out how to do that - my son loves monkey bars and if we could somehow make some indoors it would really make this winter go by more smoothly.

Maybe a play kitchen? At DD's preschool they had a couple of play kitchens outside and the kids were constantly using them.

I'm following for ideas! I just ordered this to hang up in our basement playroom. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ST8827T/ref=ewc_pr_img_6?smid=ABHPXRUEU9RQN&psc=1

We also have a dome climber in the backyard. It gets some use, and the best thing is that the one we have is fairly lightweight plastic, so it's easy to move around if we need more space.

I 2nd the idea of a bounce house, we don't have one but I know my kids would love it!
We have one of these swings in the house and the kids love it - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hammock-Chair-Swing-Hanging-Rope-Seat-Net-Chair-Tree-Outdoor-Porch-Patio-Indoor/273112336225?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
A sand box is also an easy add if you can put up with the mess, lol.

@PinkElephant: the parachute idea actually might be fun for them! They used to love playing with those in class.

There’s one area outside that has potential to hang a rope swing - I’ll pressure test it and see if It looks like it might work.

@Mommy Finger: I was debating one! I’ll need to measure the grassy area and see if it’ll fit since I’d hate for them to fall on the paved paths in the yard (it’s strangely terraced).

I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking for, but our play parachute has been a runaway hit with my kids and their friends (ages approx 3 - 8 yrs). We have the Alex one, but for some reason that one is coming up over $100 when it should be $30 or less so I didn’t link to it!

Do you have a tree or sturdy basement ceiling beam that would support a swing? My kids want one of these after playing on the neighbors’. On that note, what about one of the ninja rope/monkey bar sets (again, if you have trees to support it).

Hi all! It’s looking like distance learning is sticking around through at least the rest of the year (if not longer) in my school district. We’re in an area with mild weather so as long as it’s not raining, the kids are happy to play outside, so I’m looking for play equipment that works for a 3 and 5 year old. Our current backyard has a decent sized cement back patio which leads out to a down slopped yard, so large play structures don’t really work in our yard as there’s no place to anchor them.

Also, we’re currently in a rented house while we figure out whether we’re staying in our (very expensive) city long term or moving elsewhere, so play equipment that is easy to move is preferable.

We currently have a small playhouse (some Little Times cottage) that the kids are getting too tall for, so I was thinking maybe a larger playhouse? Is there one you all recommend?

Anything else your kids have loved in terms of play equipment (indoor or outdoor)?

TIA!
