My son goes to an outdoor preschool (Waldorf) He and his buddies are pretty destructive!
They have a lot of shovels and those digger excavator things. Of course a sandbox!! Now that I think about it, the excavator thing probably wouldn't be a good idea but putting adult-like tools in kids hands gives them purpose and they love it. You can get "kids shovels" for $25 on amazon.
They could start a garden?
I nailed some wood "steps" to a tree and they love climbing it.

Our backyard includes an "obstacle course" made of round log sections, 4x4 balance beams and some hula hoop like arches to go over or under. My front yard currently includes a giant fort made of chairs, blankets, and cardboard. I'm a huge fan of creative play with cheap materials!

Love the sensory pool ideas and the classic balls, jump rope, hula hoop etc are always great--especially if you rotate so they only see them once a week or so.

We also have a big climbing done from Costco that was about $200, if you all are willing to spend more, but its not ideal if kids are rough/push each other off!

Could you just get plastic swimming pools and put...sand? Dirt? Balls? Rice? In it? Like a giant “sensory bin”? Maybe throw in some small sand toys? So they can dig in that instead of the flower beds?

Also stomp rockets, tee ball (depending on how big the space is), ring toss, soccer/playground balls, jump ropes, small trampoline (can usually score those cheap on Facebook marketplace). Anything to get some energy out!

What about the hippity hop balls with the handles that kids can sit on and jump around on? I'm not sure how that would be when it's muddy or icy, but they are impossible to break and are a great way to get energy out.

This fall we started playing capture the flag as a tag alternative - the kids loved it.
Otherwise I'd get some soft bouncy balls, chalk, bubbles. A giant bubble wand was a huge hit at our house last summer - would mix the bubble solution in a big Tupperware bowl w lid.

Help needed!

I'm teaching a small "pod" of kids for the year. We are at someone else's house, she keeps a beautiful backyard and has a ton of flower beds that, while beautiful, the kids shouldn't go into starting in the spring.

The kids have been very destructive outside. We don't have a lot of behavioral problems among the kids, but they break stuff constantly. This isn't a problem for any of the families individually, but when the kids get together they're a bit wild. Mostly because I think they're bored. Understandably, the mom whose house it is has stopped putting toys outside because they just get broken.

Right now it's icy, and likely to be icy and muddy for the next 1-2 months. When there's fresh snow, or in the warmer weather, the kids do a lot better. But I'm worried about the next couple months.

So, with all of that said, does anyone know of any (fairly cheap) outdoor equipment we could put out there? Kiddos are K or 2nd graders.
