@skiierchck99: Ugh, that sucks about the dairy intolerance. I hope she's outgrown it, or at least that the frozen stash will tie you over.

@periwinklebee: @Littlebit7: Same situation. DD is 9.5 months and supply is definitely decreasing and I just do not have it in me to pump 3-4x a day to increase it. DD also has decreased what she eats when nursing BUT will still down 12 oz while at daycare. Unfortunately, DD was dx with a dairy intolerance at 8 weeks that we are just now trying to test to see if she has grown out of, so not only would I have to switch to formula but it would be expensive formula, so I am hoping my supply and some freezer stash will make it through.

@Littlebit7: I'm having the same issue with supply tanking now. I gave it a good fight, but my body is just over it and LO is not that interested anymore, except before bedtime and at wakeup. I was able to keep my supply steady with lots of pumping until around 9.5 months and then it tanked during the day. I'm pumping what I can/bf evenings and mornings and significantly supplementing the daycare bottles with formula.

We haven't given LO straight WCM, but by far his favorite foods are yogurt and cheese. He's also had cottage cheese. Our allergist said it was important to introduce him to yogurt by 6 months and cheese once he could handle finger foods. He has a number of other allergies and early exposure is supposed to be helpful.

@Sams Mom: Yes, same reasoning here! He consistently wanted 16 or so oz. while I was at work from the time he started daycare at four months. But around 10 or 11 months, I was no longer able to pump more than 12ish oz. in a day. So the doc was like, "Sure, just add some milk, no point in switching to formula for a few weeks and then switching again to milk."

It's totally fine to give them cow's milk once they start food, it just shouldn't replace formula or breast milk right away. But I gave my son yogurt as soon as he was on solids at six months, and I don't see why milk would be any different (again, as a "food," not replacing breast milk or formula). I'm sure I must have mixed it into oatmeal! Seems more nutritious than just straight water in oatmeal. ANYWAY, haha, my pedi gave me the go-ahead to start mixing cow's milk into breast milk at just before 11 months. I was still pumping around 12 oz. a day to give him at daycare, though, and then added some milk on top of that (and kept nursing before and after work until 20 months).

@Sams Mom: I haven’t; I haven’t really given it a true “try” yet. Maybe it’s me not want to admit that my last baby is almost one. I have this funny relationship with nursing. It’s sweet and I love it but I also am SO DONE and OVER IT but yet I don’t want it to end. See how that makes zero sense? Haha

@Littlebit7: I had cut some nursing sessions during the day because he'd really taken to food, but then BAM! no more milk. Have you tried warming it up some? My son wasn't very keen on it cold, but even room temperature made it much more appealing to him.

@Sams Mom: mine is tanking too right now at 11 months. I’ve started to supplement with formula. I’ve given him sips of WCM and he is not impressed. So I’ll continue with the freaking expensive HIPP for now. My ped said with LO1 that I could start a WCM at 11 months as I was doing soy at the the time due to tummy stuff she was having. She took to it no issue

@DesertDreams88: for the a part of your follow up, I think a lot of people would have introduced wcm like that before a year as an ingredient into the oatmeal before 1yo. It was always my understanding that it just shouldn’t be replacing breastnjlk or formula. Technically I think it never should be used like that since it’s just a supplementary drink that’s part of a whole diet, after one, but of course that’s another story!

I'm in the US, but my supply tanked around 10 1/2 months, and my son's pediatrician said WCM was totally ok to switch to because it might take a couple tries to find a formula he tolerated and it was only 6 weeks early.

Yeah my question was prompted because:
1) My in-laws babysit LO2 and were feeding her a couple oz of WCM with oatmeal, without my knowledge, age 7-8 months. The NP at my pediatrician acted like it was no big deal.
2) My supply is gone and hot dang, formula is expensive. I only used free samples with LO1 (I got like 8 free sample cans, it was crazy.

@DesertDreams88: DH’s grandmother was surprised I breastfed so long, even when LO was under a year. But when I pointed out that I would have to buy formula then, she was surprised since she just went from breastfeeding for a few months to milk, way before a year. Her frugal heart was then more supportive of breastfeeding. :silly:

Yes Canada is 9-12 months, most doctors are OK with cows milk at closer to 9 months, although I believe breastfeeding rates are still quite high at that age because of our long maternity leaves.

@DesertDreams88: so in Germany the recommendation for straight cows milk is 12 months too. BUT cows milk should be introduced in diluted form for the oat meal after 6 months. This will apparently reduce the risk of milk allergy later.

@ALV91711: it seems that there's a stated range of 9-12 months on several large websites: https://www.google.com/search?q=canada+milk+9+months&oq=canada+milk+9+months&aqs=chrome..69i57.4743j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

In Austria it was 12 months. I exclusively BF, but the ped said we could start introducing cow milk at 12 months, so I assume that would be the same for formula. That said, our ped was very relaxed and, other than establishing if we BF or formula fed, he never really asked about feeding or solids and I never asked since we didn’t have issues or concerns (it was my 2nd LO).

I’m in Canada and the recommendation here is 12 months.

My ped for DS1, who is 5.5, suggested introducing a small cup of cows mild with a snack around 10 months to get him used to it as when he started daycare at 12 months and would be drinking only cows milk.

My ped for DS2, who is 3 months, has distinctly said no cows milk before 12 months.

Just curious. Obvi in the US the recommendation is continue breastmilk or formula until 1 year, and no switching to cows milk before then. I've read/heard in Canada the recommendation is 9 months. What are the recommendations in other countries / areas? How do locals handle it? I know I could google it, but I think I'd have to google each country separately, and that's silly....

Tangentially, my parents and aunts are all in their 60s & 70s and they say they all gave cows milk much earlier. My mom even used to give me water and tea from birth, if I was hungry earlier than my 4-hour formula feeding schedule
