I had painful cysts while on the Mirena, apparently a common side effect and one of the main reasons I got it taken out. I think they would come and go, but it got to be pretty consistent. I am sorry you are going through this. I hope it resolves soon.

@coddergirl: I can occasionally abdominal pain then one day it was severe to the point where I could barely walk. I went to the ER and was admitted overnight. It ended up being a ruptured endometrioma. probably related, but i ended up having a laparoscopy to remove endometriosis after I couldnt get pregnant/failed IVF.

Some years ago I had a ruptured ovarian cyst. Given all the pain I was in the doctors ordered a MRI to rule out pancreatitis. From start of pain to everything being resolved was less than a week. Hugs to you for being in pain for months!

@muffinsmuffins - I've only been on BC 2 days :) To my knowledge it only prevents new ones rather than resolves old ones. I am hoping otherwise!

@coddergirl: how long have you been taking the pill? I would keep an eye on it if you’ve been on it the two months and no relief. Heating pad and ibuprofen helped me a lot as well. And push for a follow up ultrasound if the pain hasn’t decreased and/or if it has just to compare the size of the cyst before and after treatment.

@muffinsmuffins: Thank you! No mention of PCOS but I guess it is likely. I am in my 30s and have never had an inkling of this before, plus two easy conceptions so who knows. Glad to hear after a month the pain eased.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20’s and it started somewhat like this. I had multiple small cysts and a couple larger ones. I was prescribed BC and the pain stopped completely after about a month. Since then I’ve been monitored occasionally with ultrasound and have been on Bc constantly (I’m in a same sex marriage so being on it always is no issue for me as I’m not getting pregnant!) I still have some symptoms but the BC manages it pretty well.

If it's that painful I would get a second opinion. A friend in high school had a painful cyst surgically removed, it ended up being the size of a softball! They didn't think it was going to be that big.

If it gets more painful, don't be afraid to go to the ER or get another opinion. I'm not sure what her definition of big is, but large cysts can twist and/or rupture.

I assume she's guessing you have PCOS because of the number of cysts and put you on birth control to keep you from ovulating and creating more...but that's not going to do anything to solve the issue of the big one or treat the underlying issue of the cysts occurring...

@marym -- yep, an OB. She just said you have a number of cysts "especially a big one on the left". She was pretty nonchalant about it which is usually a good sign I guess. Thanks for the input. I think I will go back in a couple weeks for more help if the pain is still there. Also getting hot flashes which she said can be related so it's obviously big enough to be affecting me!

What kind of doctor did you see? An OB or general doctor?

Did they tell you what kind of cyst it was? Was it clear? How big?

I've had near constant cysts and have never had them removed because they're not painful, and we watched them for several cycles and they tended to go away.

I'd ask another OB for their input! If it's painful, they should consider surgery. Especially if it's so large it's at risk of twisting. And I'm pretty sure BCP would have no effect on them...

Hey all!
I have had abdominal pain for 2 months and found out via ultrasound I have an ovarian cyst on the left. It hurst *all the time*. Doc says it will go away on its own and prescribed BC pills. It feels like the pain is getting worse and more constant than before.

Anyone experienced this? Did it just take months of pain before it went away? I have read they usually don't hurt so I guess I'm slightly worried it's something more serious. 10 months pp. Have been cycling again for last 2 months.
