Glad to hear the doctor eased some of your fears. If you ever start to worry about whopping cough again (it was a big worry of mine!), google for an audio recording of what whopping cough sounds like. It is so distinctive; you will KNOW after hearing it that your LO coughing on a bit of milk is not whopping cough :)

Thanks everyone! LO is doing just fine and we had our 2 month old check-up today. Dr said she is perfect and to not worry so much. :) I felt much better after visiting with him, etc. I really appreciate all your comments and reassurances. I love this site!
:)

My youngest used to choke all the time while nursing (yay to breast milk all over me!). He still chokes from drinking water at 20 months. I wouldn't worry too much unless he coughs a lot outside of drinking milk and isn't eating well. And I have to agree on staying away from Dr. Google. :D

Google is the devil. Seriously. Step away.

The boys had coughs off and on and it was just a cold. Sometimes they would just choke a little on some milk, just like when we swallow wrong, and cough. If there are no other symptoms, I don't think you should worry one bit. If you need to, call your ped's nurse and just say LO had a coughing spell last night and you'd like to know what to watch for.

I know it's so hard to stop the cycle when you get caught up thinking of all the things that could happen to this precious baby, but it's not good for either of you if you're so worried and guilty. You haven't done anything wrong. You're a great mom! And seriously, google is the devil.

Hyla chokes while nursing regularly. I think I have a forceful letdown. She's also been stuffier lately, I think due to the weather. But I try to stay away. From dr. Google as much as possible.

I instituted a no-google rule for myself in college once I realized that no matter what medical symptom I googled the results were one of two things: Cancer or Pregnant (which would've sucked at 19).

I hope I can stay strong enough to continue the no-google rule for my LO! I don't think any good can come of google :)

I am the queen of over analyzing, and I know how stressful it can be! If it makes you feel any better, C coughed and gagged when he would nurse, and he still does at 5 months when he drinks from a bottle. I think sometimes they try to gulp it down too quickly. Reflux is another common (and harmless, in our case) reason for coughing! If you're concerned, call the pediatrician and let them worry for you :) Calling them always makes me feel better... they give me an idea of what's going on, and they make me feel proactive for speaking to them, which helps me worry less.

Xander used to choke while nursing and cough too! I think that's probably normal...?

Then later he had a cold with a cough and I didn't know you were supposed to call the pediatrician, so I did after he had the cough for about 2 weeks and they were all "Eh, it takes a while for coughs to go away, call us back in a week if he still has it!"

Stay away from Dr Google, he is the devil!

Sometimes babies just cough. R would cough but if it was once I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh honey, this kid coughs all the time while nursing. That and the choking just means my flow was too fast, at least for us. I really wouldn't worry unless there is coughing unrelated to feeding. But I am also a second-time mom whose baby was passed around like a football during the holiday! And his big bro has already given him his first stuffy nose.

I echo what the others have said ... Avoid Dr Google and call your pedi if you're worried.

Do you have any reference books on children's health at home? If not, I would get one or two, for your own peace of mind. I promised myself never to turn to Google first for health concerns when LO came along, because I didn't need the anxiety.

This book is a good place to start: Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, 5th Edition: Birth to Age 5. It's published by the AAP and very straightforward. I particularly like the descriptions of the various common childhood diseases in the back, although you sometimes have to thumb through them to find what you're looking for if you're just going by a symptom. If you're like me and you like to double-check things, get a few titles and cross-check.

It's completely normal to overanalyze every thing with a newborn! The cough sounds normal after nursing. If it's persistent, I would call my ped. When in doubt, always call! It really doesn't hurt and gives peace of mind.

Don't worry! And don't google. That's the worst.

Call the pediatrician in the morning and just ask what to look for. They should be able to tell you that it's either normal or to come in for a check.
There were so many things with DS that I googled and then called the doctor. Everything is so scary when they're tiny. (((hugs)))

@Jennimac: I would stay away from dr google!! I say this after just googling my lo's sleep so easier said than done, I know, dd has always coughed when she drools a lot. I think if she keeps waking and coughing a lot I would worry but a few coughs after nursing is probably no big deal. :)

Sometimes I love that we can look things up and have information at the click of a button. Other times I hate it.

LO woke up to nurse earlier tonight. She got a little choked up after we were done and coughed a bit. She had trouble calming down afterwards and I, of course, freaked. Now I'm convinced she has whooping cough or something else that's equally terrible. I found her hospital bulb sucky thingy and used that but she already calmed down. Then, I start googling cough in babies. Well, apparently, if they have any sign Of a cough I'm supposed to take her in. Sometimes she will cough when eating or if she is laying down. She drools a lot, so I think she is like me in that she just has a lot of saliva.

But, now I'm convinced something horribly awful is wrong with my baby and so I'm wide awake holding her while she sleeps. Of course, dh is asleep through the whole thing. She has her two month shots this Friday or earlier this week, possibly, because we have the chance of bad weather. Now I feel guilty for taking her to church and other places when I had to run errands. I wouldn't let others hold her, but I guess I messed up.

I hate freaking out like this.

Eta: I did get the dtap vaccine when I was pregnant--toward the end, but I'm the only one. So, now I also feel like I should have made more people get it even though they weren't around others that would have had it.
