I was induced at 41 weeks due to low fluid. My baby was born 2 days later after a very difficult labor with an APGAR of 1 - she was really, really not ready to be born. If the low fluid issue hadn't required it, I would not have consented to an induction. It was very bad for her (but still better than letting her risk the low fluid situation).

Dr was willing to schedule an induction anytime on/after EDD. I wanted to give LO time to come naturally, so we scheduled an induction for what would've been 42 weeks on the nose. Dr was fine with that, as long as I would come in for some additional checks and have an u/s to make sure fluid levels were fine. We had the u/s on 40w+3, everything was fine, and then of course I started having contractions that evening!

I was 41+1 when I went I for my scheduled induction, my doctor did not want me waiting any longer. I was so dreading the induction as I had hoped for a med free, intervention free birth. I had my bloody show right before we left for the hospital and contractions started in earnest once we got there. They never got the pitocin pumped up to more than a "2" before I was pushing! I had a vaginal, pain-med-free birth.

@redsmarties: I was induced at 40+6 with pitocin only, and ended up with a vaginal delivery with epidural.

I wanted to add that I agree there is a difference between being "late" and "postdate", but that when I did my research, there are some risks as you get closer to postdate (42 wks). The one that I remember is the risk of your placenta deteriorating as it is not designed to last forever, even though this does not happen often.

Ultimately, for me I was happy with our decision to induce as I was comfortable with the risk/reward of inducing vs. waiting, and my OB patiently explained her reasoning for why this was a good recommendation for me. But you have to make a decision that will work for you. Good luck!

I was only 2 days overdue, but went into labor naturally that day. I had to schedule an induction at my 40 week appointment, I think it was scheduled for 41 weeks? I went to an OB office that wasn't very forgiving, I guess, on letting you go over but my last appointments were with the more lenient OB so she didn't make me schedule it too soon. With my second LO he was born a day early, but I believe I would have gone past my due date with him as well if I hadn't had my membranes stripped that day. They also made me schedule an induction with him but it was even later at 41.5 weeks I think.

I really think having them break your water is never a good idea unless you have a medical reason to speed things up. Once they do that there is no turning back. It's almost worse than pitocin in that way.

I was the same as Erinpye. 5 days past EDD I was super bummed because I wanted a water birth. No pitocin though just cervedril and I went into labor immediately. My water broke as soon as I got my epidural (after 11 hours of trying to go natural). Gave birth not long after. I was very sad and would have waited up to 10 days after if I had had a real choice (low fluid scared them too much). But in the end I still loved my birth outcome. Go with your heart.

My midwives have said that they *will* transfer me for induction anytime after 41 weeks, but I'd like to wait until later as long as everything's going well. I've tried every home remedy possible except the castor oil.

I didn't go "overdue" but I did go past my EDD. I went into labor naturally at 41 weeks.

It's a common misconception that "past EDD" equals "overdue". From the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology -

"Waiting for the birth of a child is an exciting and anxious time. Most women give birth between 38 and 42 weeks of pregnancy. But very few babies are born on their due dates. It is normal to give birth as much as 3 weeks before or 2 weeks after your due date.”
“A postterm pregnancy is one that lasts 42 weeks or longer. Women who are having a baby for the first time or who have had postterm pregnancies before may give birth later than expected.“

Providers who regularly induce at 41 weeks or earlier without indications of problems are not following the recommendations, and are not practicing evidence based care.

@hergreenapples: same as my best friend, she tried everything - acupuncture, chiropractor, pressure point massage, membranes stripped. her midwife suggested a castor oil cocktail at 42 + 1, it sent her into labor but never made it past 9cm & had a csection. That baby did not want to come out, lol

My mom went into labor with my brother two weeks after her due date. For me as long as I am healthy and the babies are healthy I'd wait up until two weeks past my due date before considering induction. I don't like the idea of forcing nature into doing something it's not ready to do. Ask me again once I get to 35+ weeks with my twins. My opinions may change lol.

My story's a little complicated. Here's the short version:

Went to 42 weeks, didn't feel comfortable waiting any longer (I was with midwives too. OBs in my city want to induce no later than 41+4). We started with a Foley catheter, they tried to break my water the next morning but baby was still too high so they started pitocin. Eventually they were able to break my water. Got to 9 cm but then significaynt fetal HR decels and maternal fever led to a csection. Don't worry, I was a total anomaly!

I went into labor on my own at 41+3 & delivered at 41+5, my water broke when I was pushing.

I did have a nst & bpp scheduled for 41+3 but since I was having pretty consistent (still spaced) contractions so we canceled it. I also had a bp spike at 40 weeks, but was able to manage it with rest, fluids, & cal-mag.....

Given all looks well we don't consider induction/transfer of care until 42 weeks & this time my MW has an obgyn that is open to give a few more days if nst & bpp come back good. We'd also try more natural induction methods before a medical induction/transferring care.
