Thanks all for sharing your stories! I decided to go for the induction yesterday, and baby girl was born after about 16 hours-- 12 hrs pit before getting an epi because I wanted to be able to move to try to get her in a better position, then my water broke and I got an epi, a nice epi nap for about 3 hours, and then I only pushed for like 5 mins! Turns out the cord was wrapped around her neck which was why she wasn't positioning for labor on her own, so the induction was definitely the right call-- I most likely would have had to be induced later anyway and she just would have been bigger ( she is 7lbs2oz and 21 in  )

@nana87: My OB definitely encouraged me to schedule an induction around 39/40 weeks even with perfect monitoring (and AMA and IVF since those risk factors were mentioned by PPs). I wanted to avoid interventions like the plague and committed to extra monitoring past 40w. My OB said he would only pressure me if the monitoring didn't look great, Each time it was perfect. Then a major natural disaster hit at 40w5d and things got intense since we had to evacuate our home. Despite that I still felt great and was hardly dilated. I had to go into L&D for monitoring because my OB's office was shut down and didn't always see my OB at those monitoring appointments. That made me realize that you'll get as many opinions on this topic as there are doctors!

With each monitoring check (nst and bpp), baby and I were monitoring perfectly. The other OBs were not used to seeing postdates pregnancies and immediately wanted to induce. It was a difficult choice each time (against medical advice!) but no one could explain inducing because of due dates when everything looked perfect. L&D started calling me to schedule! Talk about pressure. In the end, I went in to be induced when my OB was on at 41w3d. Funny but I finally accepted my fate after talking with my European friends who OBs schedule inductions at 41w3d. It was my way of getting some extra universal confirmation. I can't say exactly why this made me feel better, but it's a crazy time as you know.

Anyway, I'll spare you the rest as it wasn't an easy induction but the good news is that DS was born at 41w5d super healthy at 7lbs10oz and just the smallest touch of meconium (they aspirated for like a millisecond). Looking back, it wasn't a choice made lightly but don't think I would've made a different choice. There are risk factors that weighed on me heavily, but my OB said that regular monitoring showing perfectly healthy results reduces that risk.

Best wishes to you!!

Honestly, my feeling is if you had a successful induction the first time, especially so early, I think an induction would likely go well for you at 41 weeks.

I actually wish I had asked to be induced at 40w2d when I began to have painful false labor. I barely slept for 5 days of irregular but painful contractions, and by the time I went into actual labor, there was meconium in my water and my labor went downhill from there until I had an emergency C-section (and terrible recovery). So I am not as against induction as I was before my first baby!

My dr wanted to induce at 41+4, which was ok by me, because I was done. I think you are safe playing it by ear. After I hit 41 weeks, I was in every couple of days for non-stress tests or ultrasounds, so I constantly had the option to opt in to the induction.

I was induced with my first at 41+3 b/c of their schedule and he was making no forward motion. With my second I was hoping for a natural labor but we opted to induce at my due date b/c I again had no forward motion, and my son, uh, kind of wrecked me (we were hoping a slightly earlier baby would be slightly smaller and less tearing). Anyway, I really wanted natural labor but when I wasn't even a finger tip dilated at 40 weeks I just said eff it and went in. Second induction was a breeze (first wasn't bad either, but I had a crappy epidural). My daughter was out in 3 pushes. I think induction horror stories are more for people who are induced early for medical reason vs. term babies. Given your 37.5 week induction, I think you'll most likely have an OK experience again. Good luck, I definitely found waiting for labor to be the worst part.

@DesertDreams88: lots of info in that article. Especially a lot about due dates at the beginning which was kind of interesting, but basically said we know nothing about due dates. Haha

Any risk is definitely scary. Pregnancy is such a wonderful and scary time all at once until the baby is safely in your arms.

@nana87: I'd say book it and try all the natural stuff you can at home! Which is what it sounds like you're going to do. :) Will be waiting for your baby update soon!

@Mrs. Goose: check out this link and scroll way down until you see "What are the risks of going past your due date?" http://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-inducing-labor-for-going-past-your-due-date/

The evidence doesn't clearly identify 41 weeks as a magical time, but it does clarify that risks start to go up as early as 38 weeks... not significantly, in some cases, but tell that to the mom / baby that it happens to.

My OB doesn't do appointments, heart rate checks, NSTs, fluid checks, ultrasounds or whatever between 40 and 41 weeks :( unless that was already part of the plan.

@Mrs. Goose: yeah I was surprised that my dr was advising 41 weeks because I'd always heard spontaneous labor is best if there are no other medical factors. But I've been reading a lot today and it seems like the benefits of waiting past 41 might not Be that big or outweigh the risks, esp since my ob who I do really trust recommends inducing. Also I'm terrible with uncertainty and super impatient, so the mental health benefits of being able to prep and stop being anxious about whether it's happening or not come into play too. And I've been induced before so I do know that my body handles it well

@nana87: I'm kind of surprised with all the stop at 41 weeks pregnancy thoughts. From what I have read, a normal and healthy pregnancy can have a delivery anywhere between 38-42 weeks and that's still considered "normal". I didn't know about any of these risks the first go round and my midwife never mentioned any. Don't they do extra monitoring (in the form of ultrasounds and/or nsts) when you go overdue anyway in order to watch out for those risks? That is the standard here anyway. As soon as I was overdue I started having bpp ultrasounds every three days max to check on the baby's fluid levels, breathing, heart rate, and activity. Honestly, I was never worried at all about going to 42 weeks. Perhaps this time I would be! Also, meconium can happen for a number of reasons at any time. When they induced me they put me on a pitocin drop and broke my water right away and it was clear. My baby was all cosy and happy for a nearly 20 hour labour.

Anyway, that's just my feelings about it and I know I'm just one case! I'd go with what your care provider is advising along with your own feelings. Obviously at this point the baby is fully done anyway so a few days before 42 weeks isn't going to matter much for you based on you being a second time mum. Good luck. I do know several people who have scheduled inductions and then gone into labour.

Personally I would induce at 41 weeks. The post date risks of still birth scare me, though clearly rare. If you're AMA I would definitely go for 41. To be honest I would consider asking for an induction this go around if my cervix is favorable at 40 wks, ha. Luckily LO 1 was born 39+4 so hopefully won't need to decide.

Same as @Mrs. Pickle: ; I am not ok with the risk levels after 41 weeks. I basically spent half of my time between 40-41 weeks researching going "over-due" vs. induction, and came to that conclusion. I am also biased because of some IF & loss, and a term-baby stillbirth that was close to me. Since you know how your body responds to induction, I'd go that way by 41 weeks.

I personally don't feel comfortable going past 41, so I'd induce. I actually scheduled an induction for 41 weeks exactly, then went into labor hours after scheduling. My doctor said getting it on the calendar gets some babies moving ;-)

Thanks so much everyone! I still am feeling torn but leaning a bit towards inducing...since I had an induction before, it's the option that I'm actually more familiar with-- I know what to expect and I know my body deals with the meds just fine (my feet were swollen after but that's pretty minimal!). Waiting is more unknown...I couldn't sleep for about 3 hours in the middle of the night last night with anxiety about it and found this helpful article while I was tossing and turning (http://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-inducing-labor-for-going-past-your-due-date/) especially the graphic below which shows pretty low c-section rates for non-first time mothers who either choose to induce or wait when overdue

Anyway I'd love to hear more stories! And cross your fingers for me that this baby decides to make her appearance all on her own before I have to decide ;)

I'm not comfortable going past 41 weeks and risking things like meconium. I think my infertility experience makes me a little anxious as I get close to my due date because there are studies that link IVF and FETs to postdate complications. That's why in my head 41 weeks is eviction day.

ETA: I was induced at 40+3 with my first and it was a great experience.

I was induced at 41+3 after a mediocre NST. I was at 5cm dilated and only needed a bit of pitocin to fully start labor. She was born 6 hours later. I tried to wait until 41+6, but I was never uncomfortable during late pregnancy.

@nana87: we induced at 40w + 4, i wanted to wait but we induced due to low fluid. The induction used a combo of pitocin and cervidil. It still failed to kick start a full on labor and we ended up going the c-section route

@hellobeeboston: Exact same with Baby #2. Went in for my scheduled induction at 41w, already contracting but making no progress. 1 cytotec pill and I was off and running. Delivered about 7 hours later.

With Baby #1, I was induced with pit at 41w. Very slow pit taper, made super slow progress, they broke my water, still super slow progress, epidural (so I could sleep), 3 hours of pushing, vacuum assist, ALMOST needed a c-section. I was having irregular contractions when we went to the hospital. I kind of wish I'd requested to wait another day or so to see if they turned into anything, but I was already scheduled and probably wouldn't have gone over well. Plus I was so uncomfortable I just wanted him OUT!

If you think you can wait and it's what you want to do, then wait. With my 2nd, they offered the same as yours - induce at 41 or wait till 42. I wound up choosing induce at 41 because I was in so much pain from carrying her so low for so long. I could barely walk. If I could have stood the pain, I would have probably opted to wait it out.
