My MIL is sort of like this.. She's actually a really sweet and loving person, but every single time we've given her news that's supposed to be good, she goes through about a week of stressing about worst-case scenarios before she chills out and is happy.

@lawbee11: Ha! Totally. *cough* I think I would seek out any possible alternative before allowing my MIL to take care of my LO on a regular basis... and with this lady's attitude, I'm sure her DIL feels the same. Some people!

@alohaorchid: I have one of those MILs you dread. It's bad when you can't gauge whether she's showing genuine emotion or just faking it. Fortunately, my mom is awesome. My family provided real parenting advice when LO was colicky or even when we have discipline issues. MIL just reminiscences on DH's childhood like it was the best thing ever-it wasn't, but there's so much denial, it'll take years before DH can come to terms with it.

@cascademom: My MIL is amazing!! Seriously the funnest, most caring, generous person. I can talk to her about anything and whenever we get together I'm genuinely excited to see her. My mom on the hand, she's one of those MIL's that you would dread having.

I bet that the DIL just loves her MIL (insert eyeroll).

This makes me think of what gossip my MIL talked about when we announced our pregnancy. I bet the gossip was even worse when she nearly tore apart our family.

MILs are such a piece of work. Those with nice ones are extremely lucky.

@Anagram: yeah, I mean maybe there's a history of the DIL's mom being a flake or something, but my MIL even said she knew I would want my mom around and just said she would love to be there to help anytime my mom wasn't.

@Mrs. Blue: and what's especially funny in this case (well, it wouldn't be funny if I were the DIL) is the coworker's assumption that they will be expecting her to do everything!

Like, assuming they even want help at first, I'm guessing DIL's mom will be the first she calls. Just because usually girls want their own mom there, you know?

This extra bugs me because when you find out you're having twins, everyone suddenly acts like it will be impossible for you to take care of your kids on your own. Yes, it's nice to have help sometimes, especially at first, but guess what, lady? YOU are not "doing this alone"; THEY are the parents and are "doing this," so why don't you just be happy that you're getting two precious grandkids and offer whatever help you desire and they seek. Grrrr.

@kjpugs: She's generally a very nice (but yes, very frazzled in general, lady who likes to talk everyone's ear off). So I'm sure she's happy, but translates that into stress somehow. And jumping 100 steps ahead.

I REALLY hope @Anagram just missed the part where she was beaming with excitement about the new members of her family set to arrive... I won't hold my breath though.

@snowjewelz: 100 steps ahead is right! I'm sure before they started TTC they probably had some ideas about child care and work--and they live an hour away from her, so proably their plans didn't include MIL care every day! haha.

We're having a slow day at work today because half the school is gone on a big field trip. So a lot of teachers/aids were hanging out in the teacher's lounge when I went to put my pump parts and milk in the fridge just now...and I overheard this:

"SO my son and DIL are pregnant--twins? Can you believe that? And they only live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I hope they're going to move. They don't even have the space for one, let alone two. They have so much to do! And I don't know how they'll afford day care. She'll have to quit her job. They probably expect me to quit MY job and take care of those babies, but I'm telling you right now, I won't do it alone. HER mother will have to step up! I can't do it alone."

I stayed out of it but um.....lots of jumping to conclusions, lady.

I thought you all would appreciate this peanut gallery gold. :silly:
