How can you compare Mexico and the Caribbean? Some of the islands are fantastic (I love the Virgin Islands) while others are just meh in my opinion (looking at you DR and Jamaica ; ). I love San Francisco and lived there for 4 years... still love it and I don't think it is a hype at all. I also like Vancouver, and I like Caribbean and have been there many times. I do want to say that we are close to Caribbean that's why we go there more often.... but I probably won't fly more than 4 hours for it. </p> <p>I do agree Chicago is a bit disappointing though.</p> <p>And who said Paris is overrated...?? :-O</p> <p>ETA: For me I think Rome was overrated. Plain personal experience.... I guess we picked a bad hotel right next to the Colosseum, and it is facing an extremely dusty and busy main street. The entire city was very dusty. I like Florence so much more. Another place that was a huge disappointment was Shanghai. Ah! The Pollution!!!! It has potential to be a beautiful place but the pollution ruins it. Maybe if I went in a different time of year it would be better? But I doubt it. I went expecting not to like it because I'd heard so many bad experiences but I ended up loving it, def one of the most magical cities I've been to. We didn't really have a plan but just walked around for a couple days and kept wandering into adventures. </p> <p>Florence though was the opposite, I'd heard so many great things and then ended up not really liking it. But they are so, so different it's really hard t compare. Also, I spent way more time in BA (two months), so I really had a lot of time to feel like I really lived in the city. I still miss the humitas empanadas. No other country has empanadas that compare.</p> <p>For a resort, I prefer the Caribbean over Mexico. But for backpacking around away from the touristy areas, I much prefer Mexico. I've only been to St. Thomas, Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. John, and D.R, so that's what I'm comparing in terms of beaches. I've been all over Mexico.</p> <p>Costa Rica and Hawaii is just a crazy comparison. Hawaii is about a thousand times more expensive. I backpacked around CR and stayed in some places that were literally 10$ us a night. And they were great. That would never happen in Hawaii. Hawaii is probably better for tourists that don't like getting off the beaten path much.</p> <p>I had one of the most fun weeks of my life in Berlin, but I have friends who are obsessed with Budapest and Prague, so it probably depends on the personal experience.</p> <p>Houston isn't terrible and there are some hidden gems, but hipster it is not (lived 30 years of my life in various places in Texas!) I actually really like Dallas, which wasn't on the list. But I like Austin, too. I prefer Dallas over Houston (similar vibes) and Austin for a more laid back atmosphere and for ACL.</p> <p>And finally. Paris.....I loved it. But again, I'm sure it's all in the individuals experience. I grew up in Dearborn and still head down there often. I love hanging out in the city, and there is so much to do but it is SO spread out that you have to have a car. Any time I do any significant traveling, I tend to like the rural areas or the smaller cities better than the large, popular cities.
