I would keep the clothes for later. I'd take a bag of properly fitting clothes and say, "I tucked away those super cute outfits you got for when they fit LO, thanks! She can't move as well in clothes that are too big. Here are some that fit if she needs a fresh outfit today. Thanks for stocking us up for next spring, that's awesome!"

Just tell her the clothes are too big. You could pick up the washed 2T clothing from her house in the morning when you drop her off.

I think it's a safety issue for pants for her to be sliding or tripping. I would have a conversation and store it in labeled boxes

My mom tends to buy DD all clothes that are one size too big because DD is really tall and has tended to grow really fast. This year she hasn't grown as much, so I had to really counsel her NOT to buy an extra size bigger because DD is super skinny and the clothes hang off of her. She didn't listen the first time of course and bought DD size 5T instead of 4t- when my mom saw how silly DD looked with her shorts sagging so much (even with a little tuck taken in the side), she realized that buying way big isn't a good strategy anymore. So that problem is solved. My MIL buys whatever size she feels like DD should be, removes the tags, and washes the clothes before she gives them so DD can wear them right away- I end up donating or passing down 90% of what she gives because it doesn't fit properly or she doesn't get things that are my style- lots of characters/ sparkles/ loud flowery prints when I prefer more classic clothing for little girls. DH has tried to tell her sizes and styles but she just wants to get what she wants to get. Whatever- some child can benefit from the brand new clothes I donate.

My MIL only buys tiny clothes., I usually cram DD into the outfit for a picture, and then that's it. Can't return because she buys everything on clearance at Ross, etc. And never has receipts. Sometimes they have defects or stains too. And she buys this terrible brand that doesn't have backing for the embroidery and DD gets rashes on her chest, and it is meant for short wide babies, and she is tall and skinny. Oh well.

I would just say something to her. I dislike it when relatives waste money on things that my LO is never going to wear. My dad also had this idea that it was better to buy "one size up" but he did weird stuff like give her snow bunting in size 9 months when she was 3 months old (i.e. the bunting could fit her in the middle of the summer). I've had to ask him to return things several times, and a few times, he couldn't, so I told him outright that we'd have to donate them. This year, he wanted to buy more clothes for LO's birthday but I told him that we still have things from him from last year's birthday that she hasn't worn yet and I think he got the idea. It has taken awhile, but he's finally starting to get it.

I have a similar problem with my MIL. She buys stuff in all the wrong sizes. Small AND big. It's so annoying. The big stuff I either save for later or get rid of it (if it's not my style). The little stuff I try to return, but the woman doesn't get gift receipts and never hangs on to receipts (and acts like I'm asking for her right arm if I ask for one), so I can rarely return or exchange things. In one month, she bought my son size 5 (not 5T, but kids size 5) underwear, 24m shorts, a 4T sweatshirt, and then size 2T underwear. He is 3 and wearing 3T stuff. And it's not like she never sees him and can't take a peek at the size he's wearing - she sees him AT LEAST once a month. I've said stuff on occasion, like "Oh, this probably won't fit him, since he's wearing X-size right now" but she just doesn't get it. So I gave up on trying to correct it and just deal with it - hang on to it or donate it.

My husband's family always buys way up bevause they assume web already bought what the girls need in their current size. For LOs 1 year birthday they all gave 3t clothes, and shes petite so she was still wearing 6-12 months size.

But it was super nice to have a full 3t summer wardrobe this year when LO was 3! So I would just thank her and twll her you will store until LO is that size.

I don't see why you can't just tell your mom straight up that your daughter shouldn't be wearing clothes that are so big. Having said that, what I would do is wash them and keep them at my house and tell my mom thank you so much, I am saving them for when she fits into them.

My mom does this as well but with the full understanding that the clothes will be put away for when they actually fit. It's kind of a running joke because I swear she'll be buying a prom dress soon for my 19 month old.

I would wash them and return them to Grandma's when you drop off LO "so that she has them at your (Grandma's) place once she grows into them". You can add that you're worried DD will spoil them before they even fit properly, so she might as well wear the smaller clothes you sent for now.

My mom always buys big and (kind of neurotically) sorts them in LO's closet in labeled bags when she visits.

@Coffee-lover: Could it just be your mom's way of giving the clothes to you for the future?

My mom always buys ahead for my kids. But she fully expects that I'll store the clothes until they'll fit. It's weird to me that your mom is putting them on her now. I would probably ask her to just use the extra clothes in her current size of she gets dirty.

Ok, here is the situation. My mom watches my daughter at her house twice a week when I work during the weekdays. I always buy extra clothes to keep over there because 1 year olds are dirty. My daughter just started wearing 2t, but I notice my mom is always buying 3t, 4t, and even 5t for my daughter.

I asked her about it once and she said it was on cleaence and a good deal so she bought them, but now she buys them big all the time. My mom is now always changing my daughter into her oversized clothes and sends her home wearing them when my husband picks her up.

Im now accumulating a bunch of huge clothes that are almost falling off my daughterr and my mom keeps all the 2 t clothes at her house to wash them. Im so tempted to stick all these big clothes in a drawr at my house and pull them out later when they will fit her, but im scared my mom will figure it out and ask why im hiding them.

Im grateful that my mom wants to buy her clothes, and dont want to say anything and make her feel weird. Its just so strange im womdering if there is an easy way around this?
