That hour and half sounds really stressful for him and I bet he's overtired too. For me I think switching would hinge on how willing they were to accommodate for him. In my classroom the transition to lunch, mealtime, and transition to rest is pretty structured but there should always be some wiggle room to make it less difficult on him. That would mean more effort from the teacher, which they'd hopefully provide. I think asking the OT for specific ways to work on that period of the day would be the next step and giving it some time to see if they help. Your right that a new setting wouldn't be any guarantee of an easier day for him. Good luck with talking to the OT and big hugs to you!

@JoyfulKiwi: I am waiting to hear back from the OT after her visit on Tuesday. She did mention that he was very different at school than he is at home.

They do have rest time from 1-3, which for most kids is fine. But lo is ready to go to sleep there by 11:30 because he is just so worn out. the 11:30-1 period of time is also the time of the day where he has the least choice, and there are a lot of expectations (sit in your seat and eat, clean up, sit at a table and play with this one toy that we give you) and it just a really huge struggle for him. Lots of screaming. Sometimes he is better after he sleeps, but sometimes he wakes up after his nap and screams for an hour.

We can change their schedule so that they go 3 half days and 2 full days, but unfortunately for my job I have to be able to work two full days and wouldn't be able to get them if we did all half days. I was actually wanting to go full time at work, but I am not sure with everything we have going on it is realistic. Part of me thinks that if he goes 5 full days he will adjust faster, but I also am afraid it will be a disaster.

If we decided to pull him out it would definitely be a change. And honestly I am afraid that whatever we do won't be any better and we will have moved him and uprooted my daughter who LOVES her school and teachers, all for nothing.

@Mrs. Lion: what time does the day end? Is there a rest period or anything like that after 11? I can definitely see why you'd want to cut out the 2nd half of the school day. If it were me, I'd probably try to create a compromise of some kind. Perhaps a pick-up time of noon or doing just 3-4 half days? I'd hesitate to eliminate the entire school session as soon as it gets hard for him, because he'll need that environment to use the tools/strategies he'll learn in therapy to practice navigating his sensory trouble spots and build up his stamina. But I also wouldn't want him to struggle for hours each day.
It also sounded like you'd need to find a whole new program if you wanted to do half-days, which would make me pause too. It might set him back to adjust to a new routine, teachers, environment, and peers. It does sound like a really complex decision. Has the OT given any input?

@JoyfulKiwi: he has trouble with sensory modulation, so depending on the sense the "volume" for that sense is either turned up too loud or is too quiet. we think auditory and tactile are too "loud" and movement is too "quiet". so he gets overwhelmed in a busy environment but craves movement. for most of the morning he is fine, but after about 11 he is hard to manage and the rest of the day is hard for him. we are having the OT start going out to the school to work with him, and the teachers say they want to implement strategies to help. i am just unsure if having him in a classroom all day is really what is best for him...

I've only recently become more knowledgeable about sensory issues in kiddos, but I have a boy in my preschool class (age 5) who has an OT come 2 days a week to school for therapy. A lot of his "misbehavior" has been explained through his OT and conversations with her have given me a lot of really fantastic tools to work with/modify the environment for him. I don't know what specific sensory areas are issues for your son, but it's possible that some of that overstimulation could be addressed without pulling him out. I don't know how helpful the teacher has been recently (I remember you had your doubts about him from previous posts).

Does anyone else have a child who struggles with becoming overstimulated at daycare? We are working with an OT on some sensory issues, and my little guy is really struggling at school.

We are trying to decide if it is possible to work through these issues, or if we should pull him out of his full day daycare and hire a nanny who can take him to a half day preschool a couple days a week.

Any experiences would be really helpful! I don't know anyone IRL who has a child with sensory issues.
