I was an EPer and originally pumped a lot (even though I had a big supply) because I hoped to save enough to quit pumping early. But I ended up having to donate all the extra milk I pumped in the first 3 months because then LO was diagnosed with MSPI and she'd never be able to use it. In the end, I donated about 1000 oz through human milk for human babies.

My response is almost identical to @Anutka, except that I used a Medela PISA instead of a hand pump. Just make sure you don't completely empty your breast when you pump - I usually pumped until my breast softened, which only took a couple minutes, then stopped. It actually helped LO - it was easier for her to latch after I pumped, and she had less green poop. I donated to my city's children's hospital milk bank because my friend had a micro premie who benefitted from the bank's donor milk, and I wanted to give back. I had to fill out a lot of paperwork and have blood work done, which was an inconvenience, but for me, it was worth it.

I donated all the milk I pumped while in the nicu, so my experience is different because I didn't have an oversupply. I would think that you will be stimulating production, although I can't really speak to that. I will say that donating milk to a hospital for nicu babies goes really appreciated. It is a little bit of a pain to get through the b/w and paperwork, but I think it's all worth it.

I donated because I had oversupply. I was always leaking so much out of the other side it seemed like such a waste.

I just used a hand pump and pumped the opposite side at the morning feed (when my boobs were fullest). I'd get 3-5 oz a day that way. It took a while, but I ended up giving 300oz.

I did it through a milk bank and the paperwork and blood tests were a pain. I would suggest looking up a local Human Milk for Human Babies group on Facebook. You can find a local mama in need and pump for her directly.

Anybody have experience donating?

I have oversupply and I'm considering donating milk, but I'm worried that pumping regularly (even for my own use, let alone extra for donation) will stimulate even more production. Some of our feeding sessions are already stressful for LO - coughing, gagging, dripping everywhere... so I'd hate to make that worse. But I figure the people who do it must usually be people with oversupply, so it must work out okay?

Anybody have experience with this?
