@brownie: Thank you for sharing and for the encouragement. You're a rock star. Great to hear that your kids are doing well and that you've found a way to manage. Yes, I'm hoping that this does not define our kiddo or our family, we'll just have to figure it out!

@adira: Thank you!! :heart:

@mrs.shinerbock: Thanks for the resource ... and I am no joke eating jelly beans as I type. Little victories. :P

@lulabee: I'm sure every kiddo is different but LO's eczema started popping up around 3/4 months. I remember it being particularly bad around 5 months - tons of scratching, his cheeks were super raw and the eczema was weeping. I eliminated dairy and soy around this time not expecting much but just to see if it made any difference. When his eczema persisted, our ped recommended just setting up an appt w/the allergist to see what they'd say. Since the eczema-allergy link is there, we figured we would eventually be seeing an allergist at some point down the line anyways. I'm sorry that you are battling eczema, too!

@ChitownRo: Yay, I'm so glad for you! That is great news! And yes, I totally hear you re: BF. Getting the hang of it was the toughest thing I've ever done, so I just have it in my head that I want to stick it out. But if it turns out that I have to let it go ... I'll be ok. I honestly never thought I'd even make it this far!

Seriously, can't say it enough -- thanks for sharing your insights + for the encouragement! DH read through everything when he got home last night and is feeling more hopeful, too. We're hoping that LO grows out of some of these or that some are false positives. Hopeful, hopeful.

@mrsads: Glad to hear that it's gotten easier + that you've been able to add eggs and gluten back into your diet. I'm going to grab some of that faux mac and cheese today if our Whole Foods has it! And with Chipotle down the street it looks like I'll be a frequent customer ...

@raindrop: I am curious to see how frequently we'll end up doing the tests. We have a follow up w/our allergist in 3 months so I imagine we'll talk about it then!

@charlotte: I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, too! Yay for outgrowing the almond allergy, that must make things easier. It looks like LO was tested for a bunch of different treenuts ... all look rough except for pecans. I'll take it? Haha. Thanks a ton for the awesome tips and for the article link!

@hummusgirl: Thanks for the link to the Times article! I'm curious to see what our allergist says about oral immunotherapy .... oh and I hope your kids are in the clear w/allergies!

I'm so sorry you're going through that, it sounds awful.

I'm curious- my second daughter has eczema and my ped hasn't said anything about me changing my diet (she's EBF at 4 months). How bad does it have to get before you start talking allergens/elimination diets? Ped said it could even be from seasonal allergies...

LO1 is allergic to tree nuts, so not as complicated as your case, but I've found FARE (foodallergy.org) to be a good resource.

And don't worry about Halloween, there are lots of normal candy that are free of the top 8 allergens - skittles and starburst, ring pops, smarties (US-not Canada), lemon heads, gummi Bears, jolly ranchers, jelly belly, sour patch kids

You can do it momma. I've been dealing with allergies for my babies for almost 5 years now. My son came out screaming 12-15 hours every day for nearly the first 6 months. I eliminated milk and soy (and back then it was one obscure online reference nothing like today). He was still reacting to stuff and I still don't know what. I was down to eating 6 things. It was insane. We breastfed for 2 years. I swear for him a week of formula was the turning point. He still comes up with soy as an allergy and something new each test (typically what he just ate). Oh yeah and he was failure to thrive.

Fast forward 4 years to pregnant with number 2. I eliminated milk and soy in the third trimester. She is a much happier baby but at 8 weeks hubs comes home and says "what did you eat?" It was obvious she was reacting. She is allergic to corn. It is in everything (even more than soy). She also hasn't found a fruit she can tolerate and apparently can't do zucchini (found that out on Monday). She's nearly a year old. I'm working with a nutritionist now to try to pinpoint her other triggers. But I'm back on an elimination diet. Luckily breastfeeding has been much easier and she is a chunker. So somethings working out for us.

All that to say, you are not alone. You will survive and at some point you both will thrive. My son is turning 5, still allergic to soy but going into kindergarten in the fall. He is small but smart as a whip. He is already doing addition and programming. My daughter is much more independent and has a personality. She is so easy going most of the time. It takes up all of our time but it doesn't define us.

One other thought: you may want to check into Paleo/Whole 30 recipes. W30 in particular is an elimination diet that gets rid of dairy, soy, legumes, wheat, and sugar. There are lots of recipes on Facebook/Instagram/Pinterest that are labelled Whole30. HOpefully that gives you some more ideas for things to eat! And BONUS: you don't have to give up sugar, which is required on W30. So yay for that.

Hang in there. My LO had MSPI and gluten sensitivites, and I was a wreck at first. But it gets better!

@extrasprinkles: just want to add a voice of hope. My daughter was intolerant to dairy, soy, wheat, fish, eggs and nuts. I successfully nursed her for over a year. I was certainly hungry a lot but we made it. And she outgrew all her allergies (as confirmed by allergy testing around when she turned two). She's now a completely healthy happy 3 year old. They very rarely even do allergy testing on infants because there are so many false positives and the kids outgrow many of their early intolerances anyway. I now have a 4 month old son and I'm on the same elimination diet again. It sucks, but I know we can do it because I've done it before. I'm just praying he does outgrow everything like his sister did.

Just wanted to give you hope. My DS tested allergic to eggs, soy, and fish at 8 months old. We eliminated and then retested at 14 months (he had big hives despite elimination, was worried about nee allergies. Showed current ones had resolved and they thought the hives were early signs of fighting off the norovirus. Apparently kids w allergies have histamine type reactions to viruses sometimes). Avoided for 3 more months, then did food challenge at the allergist- all clear. So hopefully he grows out of it soon. I'm sorry though. There are tons of great suggestions about food for you as a BFing mama. Just also want to say that there is no shame/guilt if you stop BFing. I weaned at 7 months and initially felt guilty about not making my one year goal, but it was what worked for us.

I'm sorry you're going through this - so stressful. I don't have firsthand experience but my mom is allergic to several things including soy and peanuts so I'm interested in it (and paranoid about my kids getting it!). I found this article from a few years ago pretty interesting/encouraging - they're finding ways to build up tolerance to common allergens by giving really small doses of it: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/magazine/can-a-radical-new-treatment-save-children-with-severe-allergies.html

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry! My son is allergic to peanut, wheat, and a couple of nuts and I thought that was overwhelming. Your LOs poor little back :bummed:

Thoughts:
1. Make sure you love your allergist. Ours has made all the difference in dealing with this stuff and is proactive about retesting and food challenging at a young age
2. Enjoy life products are a good suggestion, as are King Arthur flour gluten free mixes ( just may need to do some vegan substitutes when eggs or dairy are called for)
3. My son mostly eats meat and fruit anyway. He outgrew an almond allergy at age 2 and that was huge (Barney butter is not peanut contaminated). Did your allergist test for specific treenuts? We have all loved having almonds back.
4. I also worried about holidays and being a normal kid but my son is so happy eating what he knows and doesn't realize he's "missing" anything. I have my moments that I wish he could eat cake and pizza at parties but we bring our own and it goes fine. We even made an elletgy friendly cake for my husbands bday and my son just wanted to eat the strawberries!
5. Have you checked out the various products at whole foods / sprouts / natural grocers if you have those stores? Lots of good things there as far as prepackaged goes.

And all of that said, everything is going to be okay! There are so many allergies these days that I have found school and other parents to be amazing help in keeping my little guy safe

@extrasprinkles: Oh btw I want to mention that as you saw my allergies changed over the years which is why I got allergy test yearly ... probably because I broke out really bad and my parents thought they eliminated everything. Queue in that my allergy probably changed. So maybe if your LO's allergies stay stable and the same, he might not have to be tested so often. Just wanted to mention this. :)

@extrasprinkles I eliminated all those things and more for my BF babe. I've been able to add a few things back into my diet (eggs, gluten) but he's only 7 months so no allergy testing yet. On my phone so can't write too much. But you can do it! It seemed impossible when I started.

Yes, Enjoy Life brand has awesome cookies, rice milk chocolate, etc that's safe and tasty. Amy's makes a "mac and cheese" that's free of all the allergens and tastes amazing.

Also I eat a lot of Chipotle, it's the only place I can safely eat out.

@raindrop: 5,000 thanks for all of the info! It's helpful to read though I'm sorry you had to go through it. Nothing about the allergy testing seems ... pleasant. Oof, our little guy shrieked from the moment they stuck him and then for about 6 minutes after. The worst part was that I couldn't touch his back or else I'd mess up the test ... so I was just trying/failing to soothe him while holding him under his armpits. :(

@MrsRcCar: Glad to hear that it's become less overwhelming for you, I'm hoping to get there ... soon. Will be in touch w/?s when I get my head on straight - thank you!

@MrsSRS: This is awesome to hear - we live right near a Whole Foods. I'll probably go investigate tomorrow! Dang, if I couldn't have baked goods + treats, I would cry.

Whole foods has a few lines of baked goods, etc, that are free of the top 8 allergens, and so is the Enjoy Life candy brand, so as long as they are also barley free you don't have to live without Halloween treats since those other allergies are all in the top 8

We are celiac with peanut/tree nut/egg/ dairy issues. I found a lot of support from food allergy groups on Facebook. Plus there are great resources at the local children's hospital. Feel free to wall me with questions and will dig through my recipes. It's overwhelming at first but it's become second nature for us now.

I tried to find some imagines of it... but either I can't find them or I totally remembered it wrong. Haha here is what I did find. I some how remembered it being smaller with a bunch of more needles. But my arm did look like the one in the picture now that I think about it more.

@extrasprinkles: I had pretty much yearly tests till 12 I think. I believe I stop having yearly tests because at 12 my skin cleared up quite a bit (just in time for acne! - thanks body).

As a teen I only had really bad eczema on my joints (skin to skin contact). Oh I'm allergic to my own sweat! Which was that reason. My food allergy definitely mellowed out by my teens.

I will say I only had the test where the prick your back (lots of pricks... painful) once that I remember at maybe 7ish? Who knows if I had it younger.

Then most of my yearly tests were this small 2 inch square with a ton of needles sticking out of it thing with like a million needles that then pricked on my arm all at once. Then we waited to see which prick had a reaction. I believe sometimes I had to come back the next day to see if the reaction got worst. Edit - I'm now sure my memory was pretty wrong but I'm leaving this here just to give a sense how many a child remembers this... I'm in my 30s now and I hate those allergy tests!!

Hugs, y'all. HUGS! I feel better already.

@purplepumps: Thank you for sharing re: your brothers' experiences!! And in terms of rice, I don't think they tested for that but LO has had rice cereal w/o any huge issues. Fingers crossed that rice doesn't have to be added to the list!

@avivoca: Wow, 11! I'm glad that the # of his safe foods are increasing - I hope that continues for him and your friend's family. I will definitely look into sunbutter, Teese + Elecare! Thank you!

@raindrop: Ah, I hope LO has a story like yours! : ) Thanks for the encouragement! If I'm recalling right, the allergist was open to trying cooked dairy but egg looks like a no-no for now. Do you recall how often you were tested for your allergies to see if you had grown out of them (or not)? Ha, a question I was too overwhelmed to think of at our appt!

@ash: I totally had to google MSPI. : ) Ah yes, Pinterest. I feel like I'm going to be pinning a lot more now. I'm glad you have been able to find options for your daughter!! Good luck to you!!

@mariej: Oof, eczema is rough, no? But I am so impressed that you are still hanging in there with nursing! I'm seriously encouraged. Thank you for sharing!

Aww hugs! Like you, we had a long dealing with our ped and dermatologist for what we thought was eczema with my youngest DD. We ended up taking her to an allergist when she was around 10 months and we found out she was allergic to milk, peanuts, corn and eggs. Like you, I was overwhelmed because I was wondering what she would eat. It hasn't been easy, but we've been able to manage. I eliminated all of those items from my diet and I'm still nursing at almost 17 months. Good luck and hugs!

My 9m old has some allergies too (egg and tree nuts for sure) plus she's mspi so I've eliminated soy and dairy for 8 months now. I'm hungry a lot but I use pinterest for food ideas. For her, I just give her fruits and veggies (we did BLW). And I just found these chicken and apple meatballs that she gobbles. There are lots of gluten free options these days to help you avoid wheat.

@yin: will hopefully chime in!!

First off *big hugs*!! It must be tough.

Is it possible that baked / cooked dairy & egg might be okay?

Also I think it's possible he might grow out of a lot of these allergies. Because that's what happened to me.

As someone that grew up with food allergies that flare up my eczema ... I grew out of all my nut allergies and dairy allergies. I don't think I was ever allergic to eggs, wheat and barley though. I was allergic to other things that I grew out of (shellfish was another one).

I still have my peanut (legumes) allergy and I have a citrus allergy (lemons and generally tart fruits).

It was pretty bad as a kid but *now* even if I eat what I'm allergic to the reaction is not as bad as it was when I was younger.

I guess what I'm saying is that it I hope it gets better. :)
