@Mrs. Twine: thanks so much! I've favorited your post :) It's a little crazy how I'm frantically shopping for winter in the middle of summer, but there's so many deals right now!

We go out in some ridiculously cold temps (-10 F on occasion) because we love to be outside. I detailed what Lorelei wore for outside play here: http://www.hellobee.com/2013/04/18/the-big-chill-winter-gear-for-april/ I prefer the one-piece suits for little ones because they're less permeable; i.e. less places for snow to sneak in. If your child is walking, you'll want different boots. We prefer Kamik or Sorel.

@lamariniere: The coldest 2 years ago was -28°C! Last year was considered a warm winter since it was barely -21 for a day or two.

@Crumbs: You should still take advantage of the sales because the winter stuff is expensive, especially if you buy it all at once, in the winter, like we had to do. I remember the coat was on sale, but the pants were like 30€ each!

And wow, -14°C is REALLY cold! I think the worst I saw here was -10°C at night and I remember a solid week of -7°C during the day. That was really cold to me, so I can't imagine dipping below -10°!

@lamariniere: Thank you! You're awesome! I needed the visuals. I think I need all that here, plus a thick snow suit and boots for the truly depressing days. They allow the children to play out until -14°C here. Holy! Other times, they'll play inside. But man, 7°F and I think it's cold in the mid 40's.

After seeing what you posted, I realize I went a little overboard. I thought I was being ultra clever for taking advantage of 4th of July sales (for my mom to send to me) and I think I ended up complicating things.

Do you know how long your daycare takes the kids outside for? Ours is 45min-1hour.

I don't think it is as cold here as it is where you are, but this is what I have for DS's winter gear, except I couldn't find his Gortex boots, just the rain boots. Plus gloves and hats.

The pants are both lined with warm liners and are waterproof. The coat has a removable vest so we could use it for both cool and cold weather. His gloves are waterproof too. Definitely go with waterproof since I'm sure you DD will play in the snow.

As for all the long johns and layers, a lot of of parents dress their kid in thick tights+regular pants. I would put DS in a short sleeve tee + long sleeve tee + sweater. Daycare would remove layers if they thought he was too hot.

And it doesn't help when everything looks like winter gear to me when in fact it's supposed to be for fall/spring! I'm from Southern Cali, we can wear flip flops in December, I'm sooo out of my element!

My head is spinning from all the different kinds of winter gear available for toddlers here! This is the first time I had to think about this and goodness ... there's so many different combinations! I get it's cold here and babies sleep outside even in the winter, so I'm trying make sure my LO won't freeze. The day cares just give a general response and don't seem to think much of it since it's normal to them.

Here's what I've found so far, in case anyone else is in (or will be in) a similar situation. I'd love to hear from cold weather bees for what you all dress your babies or what you wore yourself as a kid.

1) snow overalls + fleece jumpsuit + long johns + maybe even clothes under? WTF, I would die of heat exhaustion wearing all that! So maybe just clothes under would be fine?

2) rain suit + fleece underneath + clothes for fall/spring?

3) then there's the plastic non-breathable rain suits vs. the breathable ones

4) Then there's a outer shell jacket that's wind & water proof + another jacket made out of fleece that's also w&w proof that goes underneath it + clothes for fall/spring

5) Then there's w&w proof mittens, hats that are just plain thin or thicker ones or ones that you combo like everything else.

6) Then there's undies/long johns that would seem way too warm to wear when you're inside under normal clothes.

I'm dizzy now. Am I missing something?
