@daniellemybelle: I just saw this and it is a quick and simple explanation of when you are most fertile and why.
Chances of getting pregnant by BD after ovulation are pretty unlikely. I would think that most people who say they did got their O date wrong.

http://www.parents.com/getting-pregnant/trying-to-conceive/ovulation-getting-pregnant/

And here's another (but I'm not familiar with the source) that shows the odds of getting pregnant from 5 days before O to 3 days after. The highest odds are 1-2 days before. Im not so sure they are super accurate (since I do think chances of getting pregnant 5 days before O is not a 0% chance) but I think the overall idea that 1-2 days before is ideal and after O is pretty low chance is accurate.
http://m.newhealthguide.org/Can-You-Get-Pregnant-After-Ovulation.html

@LovelyPlum: That's right though, to ovulate on the last green day! I thought you'd have one more green day after ovulation but Ovia does it so you have 5 green days leading up to ovulation & then the last green day is O day. So they don't really put you as having a great chance after O day but of course it's possible.

I guess I was wrong in thinking that the day before O and O day were the highest peak times! We'll try having sex more on the lead up days this cycle if I'm not pregnant!

I've been using Ovia for about 6-7 cycles now, and I'm not 100% sure how accurate the green fertile window is yet. This is the first cycle where we actually tried, but I feel like I ovulated on the last green day. We will see in a week or so whether or not it worked!

Eta: there's something to it, I guess, because we were TTA and using the green as a guide. I didn't get pregnant when I didn't want to, so I guess that's something!

2 days before O is great, that way the sperm are already there waiting. The egg only lives 12-24 hours so if you have sex when you are ovulating you can risk them missing each other. Also, you can O anywhere from 12-48 hours after your + OPK. The only way to confirm O is by temping (so if you are marking O day by your OPKs, you can be off a day or two). I got pregnant with both of mine from having sex 4 and 5 days before O (4 before O with #1, 5 before O with the #2). Sperm can definitely survive a couple of days in there.

Oh and for the gender thing, I have one of each so I don't put much stock into those gender theories. If they help one way, it is probably a pretty insignificant percentage.

My opks have a definitely fade in and fade out pattern and we used to try to time it so that we'd try as soon as it started getting dark and then the next day or two afterwards. I think we've managed to time it for day before o and day of o that way. We've gotten pregnant on the first or second cycle each time (4 times now intentionally). That said, I'm currently pregnant with a baby who was apparently conceived 6 days before my positive opk (presumably 4-5 days before o!). I know this because we were actively preventing during my fertile period this time (oops).

@lilteacherbee: @808love: @Truth Bombs: I was sure I was going to have a girl based on how early we conceived this time but it is a boy!

@simplyfelicity: Thanks! We weren't able to try right away when I got a positive OPK this month because DH was out of town and we didn't try at all leading up to it for the same reason. We'll see pretty soon here if we're on to the next month!

@daniellemybelle: I see what you mean! Once I get a positive, we would BD that night and the following two and got pregnant three times that way. I mean, you are fertile before you get a positive (since sperm can live a while) but I don't think you need to BD THAT far in advance. And unless you have a super predictable cycle, there is no way to know that.

Good luck! :goodluck:

@SweetiePie: Oh, I have never heard that about the sperm sending some kind of signal! Bodies are weird, huh?

@simplyfelicity: Yep, using OPKs. Not temping. So when I put in a positive OPK, Ovia changes it to have my most fertile day as the day before the positive and my ovulation day as the following day. This month I got two days of positives before a negative (O day). They still had the day before I got any positives as my most fertile day. Just kind of odd that it's like, you get a smiley but your peak day is already passed?

@dc yoga bee: Interesting! I thought a positive OPK is go time but next month we'll try more leading up to it!

@808love: Well, @Truth Bombs: @lilteacherbee: "prove" your theory! I think there are "gender swaying" methods based on this but I can never remember if it's the girl or the boy sperm that is supposed to live longer. Obviously not a focus of mine!

For my first two pregnancies, we were doing cycle monitoring with s fertility clinic and we got the whole "doctor says intercourse tonight" phone call the day before ovulation and the day of ovulation - I think both times I had already ovulated when they did the ultrasound and they said sex even that night, so at least 12 hours after ovulation, was not too late. And I got pregnant first time both attempts.
With my third pregnancy, I just used digital OPKS and it wasn't until the fourth cycle when I used Clear Blue Advance and they give you your four most fertile days, that we got pregnant. That was after a miscarriage so maybe that's why it took longer, or maybe we needed the extra days to maximize our chances.
Anyway, I guess my point is that ovulation day is obviously not too late for some people, but a few days before can be perfect timing too. I would cover my bases and try hit every day you think you are fertile.

I have this theory that people who follow this conventional advice tend to have girls. Most people who do fertility planning follow this rule too and thus more girls. (Speaking from observations of my own circle of friends). The surprise babies or last minute 'hits' are usually boys. Something to do with how long the girls vs. the boys sperm last. I'm pretty sure I didn't make this up but I don't have any research to back it up. Just my own putting two and two together.

Yes, our RE said same thing as ovia. Also, it takes sperm 8-9hrs to capitulate (I think I'm remembering the term correctly,) so if you are having sex on ovulation day only, it still takes sperm 8-9hrs afterwards to be ready and able to actually fertilize the egg. That's why they harp on having sex before.

@daniellemybelle: Interesting! Are you using opks? My guess is that if you are using a simple calender method (cycle is 30 days, luteal is usually 14, so you ovulate on cd 16) then they are giving you a rough estimate since a lot of women can have longer or shorter luteal phases and still have the same number of cycle days. So, by encourging you to bd two days before, there is a higher likelihood that you won't "miss" the egg, especially since sperm lives longer than the egg. As far as I know, the egg lives for 12-24 hours if not fertilized while sperm lives 48 hours (on average) but there are many sperm who will live longer and some shorter. That's why it's more effective to bd before ovulation...so the sperm is "waiting" for the egg. Does this make sense? I hope I am explaining it well!

I have always heard that you are most fertile 1-2 days before O. O day is already too late.
As far as the egg disintegrating, I think they mean that there needs to be presence of sperm in the vagina. I think that I remember reading or hearing at some point that the chemistry of the vagina changes when there's sperm present? So maybe if it's not there "waiting" for the egg the egg says "ok, nothing here, time to peace out"?
I don't know this as fact at all, I'm guessing based on a faint memory I have and what Ovia told you.
But the fertility 1-2 days before O I know for sure I've heard multiple places.

I saw that my highest fertility score was two days before ovulation when I thought it would be the day before or day of. I messaged Ovia and this is what they said:

"You will usually see your highest fertility score (10) approximately two days before your predicted ovulation date. Reason being-is the closer you get to ovulation, the score will decrease since the egg will disintegrate after it is released if no sperm is present; your chances of conception are then not going to be as high."

I've never heard this about the egg disintegrating like right away. In fact I've heard sperm can catch the egg on the way down the Fallopian tube a day or two after ovulation. What's the truth?

I find it interesting that if you get a positive digital OPK and ovulate in the next 24 hours, and you try on those two days like OPKs tell you to, according to Ovia you have already missed your most fertile day!
