My husband eventually did get through to a person at the IRS and it's legit, but it was just a small mistake on our part that caused a dominoeffect. It should be cleared up in a month or two. Thanks for the support, everyone!

@babynumber1: Although HR Block employees are not CPAs, they aren't just people who plug numbers into a program like you or I would at home. My MIL has worked at HR Block for 10 or so years and is required to go to multiple trainings annually and probably more before she started. They might not have the same knowledge base and experience as a CPA, but they do have training and knowledge far beyond the average tax paying person.

I just read that some hackers got a hold of a bunch of people's tax returns and filed new ones in their name, so even if the info is accurate it could be a scam. Be careful about calling the number on the letter - check if it's a legit IRS number first, and if you're not sure, call the number on the IRS website instead.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I don't think it's a scam, they have accurate figures cited from specific lines of our tax return, and I don't know how they would have gotten this info otherwise. the phone nber they have listed took us to a horribly convoluted IRS phone menu, though we didn't get to speak to anyone yet.

Also thanks for the input about h&r block vs a cpa... now to find a skilled, awesome cpa....

We went through this -- it was so stressful! We got a letter saying my H owed about $5000. It was a legit letter, but he knew right away they had calculated something wrong. He put together all the paperwork proving he didn't owe them anything, and in fact, if they wanted to be exact, they owed him about $30. A few months later he got a check in the mail :-) The IRS definitely makes mistakes, but with documentation they can for sure be corrected.

I'm a CPA so I've dealt with the IRS a ton. Major thing is documentation. As long as you have documentation it's easy to clear things up. By easy, I mean that you can clear it up not that it won't take time. Dealing with the IRS takes some time. I would try and handle it yourself before paying someone else if it's simple as documentation requests. I'm more than happy to send you a letter template. Please PM me.

@Applesandbananas: I agree. I would definitely call the IRS first to be sure it isn't a scam and then get clarifications about the discrepancies.

Not quite the same, but I have been audited twice and both times I had a contact person at the IRS who I could speak to and they had all of my legitimate info and access to records. They were pretty helpful and I was able to defend my case both times and get reductions in what they had calculated.

We got one that said we owed because they didn't believe our statement about DH's tuition. We sent copies of receipts of payment and it was cleared out. Ours was pretty straight forward though. I would first make sure it's legit, then gather the documentation to back your claims and go to a CPA to make sure it's all in order.

I do have a bit of experience with this. They sent a letter saying I owed $16k plus penalties and it was my second notice! I never got a first notice! And they were totally wrong.

They failed to record my estimated tax payments (partnership income that doesn't withhold) even though I sent in the money and listed it properly on the return. I think it was for the year we got married and they assigned it to ME but then failed to connect ME with me+husband joint return. It literally took three hours and four different reps on the phone to sort it out and then the last person finally admitted it was the mistake of one random person who didn't record it correctly. And he claimed he fixed it for me and I never received a letter again. That was over 2 years ago.

So. I think it's smart to meet with the HR block rep or another CPA and if you can have them call and fight on your behalf that would be good. Or set aside 3+ hours to do it yourself! My CPA laughed when I told him and he said the calls are always like that and he gets like five things together to call at the same time. Ugh. Sorry you're dealing with this but try not to worry. It sounds like their mistake.

@DesertDreams88: did you receive a letter? I've heard of IRS scams where people receive letters stating they owe back taxes. I would go to irs.gov and call a phone number from their website to confirm that the letter is legitimate. If so, a CPA would likely be a better choice than H&R Block and likely similar in cost in the long run. You can find a CPA through your state board of accountancy.

Just got a letter saying my husband and I owe $3000 to back taxes to the IRS.... yep. Basically they are saying there are significant discrepancies between what we reported on our 2013 TurboTax return and what our employers / account managers reported.

I think most if not all of the information they're working off of is false or a misunderstanding. For example, they seemingly have paperwork with my IRA contributions, but I don't have an IRA. They don't have any documentation from my grad school, but, I went to grad school. So, my husband and I made an appointment with H&R block on Sunday to review all our documentation and hopefully understand and counteract their claims.

Has anyone ever gone through this process and have any tips? I feel so in the dark here and powerless against what the IRS says.
