@artbee: I don't know that I'm actually worried - just more think about this issue. At my last appointment at 19 wks, my OB and midwife weren't concerned (but I had just gained 4 lbs). Of course, if my OB or midwife think its an issue I would see a nutritionist.

I had the opposite problem, gained too much weight. Why don't you talk to a nutritionist if you're worried about it?

I started at a healthy weight and only gained 7 lbs in the first 20 weeks and it was very sporadic. I kept gaining, losing, and gaining it back again. I was eating and exercising the same the whole time. I'm 23 weeks now and in the last 3 weeks, I've gained 5 lbs. I think as long as you eat right and get exercise your body will gain what it needs to gain.

i'm supposed to gain 35 pounds and at 27 weeks, i've gained about 23. trying to gain a lb a week, but i know what you mean, so hard! i'm afraid my weight gain so far is from the not-so-healthy food i've been eating =T..... i need to eat healthier. i think the midwife will let you know if you're not gaining enough weight.

I'm up 15 pounds at week 21, but also have 9 inches on you, height-wise. I figure that I'll probably max out the recommended weight gain andhit 35 lbs gained, but since I'm tall it probably won't be an issue.
I'm guessing you'll start to add pounds soon, since your baby is going to add at least 5 or 6 pounds before he's born. But if you're losing weight after working out, that seems a good time to whip up a bagel with peanut butter to replace those calories!

I didn't gain a pound until my 19th week. I gained the first 5 within the next three weeks, and now at 25 weeks, I am up 10 lbs. I was concerned about the lack of weight gain, but my doctor assured me that 20 weeks likely going to be the magic number and I would certainly start gaining after that. She was right!

She also said that she prefers you gain very little in the first half of your pregnancy, because you absolutely will gain in your second half. The baby doesn't weigh much before that, so it makes sense to try and keep it in check if you can. Everyone is different, though.

@winniebee: I am going to ask my doctor on Friday about weight gain and if she is concerned at all, though I don’t think she will be. I think probably that everyone is just different. I know I eat well, and enough, so its not like I am starving myself to keep skinny or anything. It’s just sort of mystifying since my bump is big and I’ve gone from an A to a full C cup – but only really gained 6 pounds! We do sound pretty similar though re: pre-pregnancy and weight. I’ve been my same weight since I was a teenager, and now at 30 had just started to see a shift in my metabolism.. Otherwise, I’ve generally been able to eat whatever I wanted and remained the same weight.

I"m 5'4" and my pre-pregnancy weight was 135 (very muscular). I didn't have any morning sickness to lose weight to, and I worked out all the way through my 8th month.

My first trimester, I gained 4 lbs. In the first part of my 2nd trimester, I gained about 1 lb per week, and towards the end of it, it varied between 1 and 2 lbs per week. That weight gain continued through my 8th month and in my 9th month, I've only gained 1 lb. So all in all, I've gained 35 lbs this pregnancy.

If you're still working out and you notice that you're losing weight, then you need to make sure you eat more at each meal to make up for the calories you burn during the workout. But as long as you're eating a healthy diet, you won't need to worry so much about gaining enough weight. Your body will gain it as it needs it.

Yeah, it's pretty typical to gain more toward the end. I was gaining two pounds per week the last couple of months with my first pregnancy.

its different for everyone, but a lot of people gain more towards the end. I didnt gain much at all in the beginning. But now at 26 weeks I've gained much more. I think towards the end you will gain more than 1lb a week

@yoursilverlining: Thanks, that's reassuring. I had NO morning sickness (in fact, was HUNGRY throughout first trimester hence the early weight gain). Pre-pregnancy it took quite a bit for me to gain weight - I worked out frequently but didn't really ever diet. Wondering if that means I need even more calories to gain weight.

I’m 19 weeks and have gained 6 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight. I lost weight in the 1st trimester due to morning sickness, and am now up 6 pounds from my original starting pre-pregnancy weight.

I eat a lot, and eat plenty of good fats (full fat dairy, avocados, nuts) so I know its not diet-related.

I am approximately your same height/weight.

I know everyone gains weight differently during pregnancy, but by mid-second trimester were you gaining a pound a week?

I continue to be a little concerned of my weight gain (or lack thereof). At 20.5 weeks, I'm up 7 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. Overall, I think that's not bad, but the pace of my gain is odd. I gained 3 lbs in the first 10 weeks, and then nothing for six weeks....but gained another pound during week 16. Then I pigged out like crazy during the holidays and gained 4 more pounds by 19 weeks. At the gym last night, I had lost a pound so my total gain is still 7 lbs.

My midwife wants me to gain 25 lbs - I could obviously still get there with 19.5 weeks to go, but I pretty much need to gain a pound a week, which isn't happening yet. I was hoping to be up 10 lbs by 22 weeks, but that means I have to gain 3 pounds in the next week and a half, which probably isn't healthy. I really do eat quite a bit so not sure why I'm holding steady. I work out about 4 times a week, but nothing crazy (usually elliptical or a walk/jog combo for 30 minutes). I know your body gains what it needs to gain, but I want to make sure our baby boy is growing strong! My belly is growing pretty steadily, so I know that's a good sign.

(FWIW, I'm 5'2 and pre-pregnancy weighed 110 lbs).

What has your experience been with this?
