@mrs. wagon: oh gosh, we were like that in the beginning, hubs was anti-paci and you know how we have to count how many diapers in a day, paci or no paci, formula vs breast milk and so on...those stuffs stressed me out, and my mom was like "YOU NEED TO CHILL!" Lol!

I am getting better at it and you are right..."Unless the small stuff turns into big stuff...THEN you can swear!" Oh motherhood! :)

@mooncici: hehe no problem. I've learned to not stress out about things that COULD be problems... because a lot of times they don't turn out to be a problem at all!! Wagon Sr. was always worried about giving him the paci too much/too often, and then he dropped it completely on his own. Just another example of don't sweat the small stuff. Unless the small stuff turns into big stuff... THEN you can sweat! :)

I plan to use it but only for a VERY short period of time. I am thinking they all need to be gone at like 4m-6m old. I don't want the dependency and I don't want the " attachment to an object" deal going on....That's why I seriously hope he doesn't get attached to ONE specific teddy.

Thank you everyone! :)
I am not anti-paci either, I give my LO paci when he is fussy but he doesn't really take it, only a few min then he spits it out! Oh well...

@mrs. wagon: Thank you for this - - - "I'm of the camp of if it works, just use it, until it becomes a problem... then deal with it then. :)"

I was anti-paci, but then I really didn't realize how much babies rely on the sucking action to calm themselves. So now, my son's a pacifier addict and I am okay with it.

I am very pro-paci. I don't want my daughter to be a thumb sucker. I was, and I didn't give it up for *years*. I'd rather have her be a paci addict, and then wean her off of it around a year, than be a thumb sucker for life. Unfortunately, DD likes her paci, but she also seems to be quite determined to become a thumb sucker. I might not be able to stop her...

I was never anti-paci. We just figured we'd see what DS wanted. He ended up being big on sucking to soothe himself and he was SO colicky. Soothies are the only kind he'll take. We're hoping to wean by 18 months. It would probably be earlier but we're about to move and I know I'll need it for sanity!

I would be anti-paci, if most of my friends weren't anti-paci-until-their-kids-were-born. Yeah, there are downsides to pacifiers, but there are also downsides to having a baby screaming behind you while driving (just as an example.)

I was anti-paci too. Then I had a baby who wouldn't sleep apart from me without sucking something. The only way DH could take a turn with him was if he had a pacifier. So of course I gave in. Now it's a life-saver in the car.

I don't have kids yet, but I think I probably will use a paci, in order to avoid the thumb issue. I was a huge thumb-sucker growing up and it took me a LONG time to wean off it. I'm HOPING that it will be easier to wean if I can actually take it away from my kid.

That said, I'm also worried. My best friend's daughter still uses her paci for naps and nighttime and she's almost 3. To me that seems kind of old to still use the paci, but I don't have kids, so I don't really know. In theory, I'm hoping I can take the paci away before (or around when) my kid turns 1.

The other thing I don't like about paci is I don't like having the paci in EVERY picture. I'm hoping I can restrict paci use to naps and bedtime, but, again, I don't have kids, so who knows!

I was sort of anti-paci until cracked/bleeding nipples made me seek some sort of help for non-nutritive nursing. She took a paci for a very short amount of time only really at nap/bedtime but then found her thumb. At 26m we are trying wean her from thumb sucking which is difficult since it is always with her.

Wagon Jr. was extremely soothed by sucking. So he had a paci almost all the time when he was a newborn. He dropped it on his own when he found his fingers, then he consistently sucked his fingers for comfort until about 1.5 years old, when he dropped that on his own as well.

Because we were so spoiled by not having to take a soothing thing away ;) I'm of the camp of if it works, just use it, until it becomes a problem... then deal with it then. :)

On that note, I have seen a 5 year old with a paci and I think that's just ridiculous.

I give both my kids pacifiers, I prefered that then thumb sucking. (easier to remove) that being said, Sienna barely takes it, but shes a sucker (as in she gives herself hickies even after she's done eating, so that's when I give her a soother.)

We gave LO a paci at the hospital. It seemed she always had her hands in her mouth. We weren't surprised about that part tho bc when we went to have our 4d ultrasound we could hardly see her face bc her hands were up in her mouth. I would much rather her take a paci than suck her thumb since I can't take her thumb away from her.

We weren't pro or anti pacifier. We waited to introduce one until 5 weeks but then he wouldn't take any of the ones we had so I thought we were going to be anti-paci. Then a friend of mine told me to try MAM and my son loved those so we are pro-paci. He doesn't get one just because but we do let him have them to sleep at night. He has stopped needing them for naps though so there is light at the end of the pacifier tunnel (he is almost 16 months). Our son's pediatric dentist saw no issue with my son's mouth due to pacifier use.

I was anti-paci because I thought it was a cop-out or something.

But then I saw how much my LO loves to suck, even when he's not hungry, so as soon as he turned 4 weeks, I began offering the paci. I only use it in the evenings, but I also bring it in my purse when out as it is super nice when I'm out to be able to whip out the paci to make him happy if we are out somewhere and he starts to fuss.

Plus they say it's good for preventing SIDS, supposedly.
