have you tried a wubbanub? it stands up a bit better and may stay close to his mouth so he can find it himself. or have you tried taking the paci away once he's asleep? my LO would somehow know if the paci was in the vicinity of her mouth and wake up crying for it. but if i took it away she'd forget about it. she kind of naturally dropped the paci herself tho so i'm not sure how to wean without CIO but a lovey sounds like a good idea!

While we didn't do CIO for pacifier addiction, we did CIO in general. The pacifier is probably soothing to him. When we did CIO with LO, we used a pacifier, and he would usually fall asleep with it. If it fell out, he started sucking on his hands as his self soothe.

I think having something (lovey, hands, etc) is helpful when you're trying to teach your baby to self soothe!

@hilsy85: I was thinking about it! Is it too soon to put stuff in the crib with him?
@skibobrown: LOL that worked out! Hopefully we'll have the same luck.

We did some CIO to deal with DD's pacifier addiction, when the night wakeups to replace the pacifier started getting ridiculous. It worked ok, but then another month or so later DD finally learned how to replace her paci on her own, and that solved the situation for good. Now we put her down to bed with at least 4 pacifiers spread around her crib, so she always has one in arms reach during the night. I have no idea what pacifier weaning is ultimately going to entail for my little paci addict, but I'm happy with our current solution for now.

Have you considered a lovey? Something else he could suck on and that would be easier for him to put back in his mouth if he wakes up--like a little blanket?

We still use a paci at night/naps, so no help there!

DS (5 months today), has been waking every 20-40 minutes for his pacifier starting around 3am. It's been getting steadily worse since his four month sleep regression and his transition out of the swaddle (he's now in the Magic Sleepsuit). Once we get up and pop the paci back into his mouth, he's asleep almost instantly and spits it out soon after. Once it's out, he wakes up and it's the same game all over again.
We have only used the pacifier for sleep and naps, but now I'm thinking it's time for us to go cold turkey. I HATE that we're even considering this...I never imagined I would have to do CIO. Has anyone else ever been in this boat? What did you do? How did it go? How did you break the paci habit for naps?
