We are doing modified Ferber too. Our LO does best when we don't check in (found out by trial and error), but if she's really losing it, I will give her the paci. I don't have a problem with it, as she only has it to fall asleep, and I plan to wean her from it at 12 months. I'm in the camp of whatever works for you.

PS, sleep training can totally include middle of the night feedings. It sounds like things are going relatively well for you guy. Good luck!!!!

@erinbaderin: Sorry if that was confusing. I do only go in if he's crying. If he's just talking/moaning I don't do the checks.

If we don't put the pacifier back in, the whole process just takes a lot longer.

I thought you were only supposed to do checks if they were crying? What happens if you don’t put the pacifier back in? What if you don’t go in at all?

LO is 4.5 months old. Although I'm not sure we are officially "sleep training" because I still expect him to wake at night to eat, we are trying to get some sleep routines in place. My question relates to the beginning of the night...

We've been doing a sort of Ferber method. We do our routine, and I rock him with his pacifier. He goes in his bed barely awake and then we go in to check in 5ish min increments. He will cry/groan a bit but it rarely escalates between checks. When we go back in, I usually pat him and then put the pacifier back in. After a few of these checks, he will fall asleep.

Are we hindering the entire process by putting his pacifier back? Do I need to do the checks without giving him it back? I feel bad taking it away because it definitely helps him calm down, but I don't want to create a bad sleep crutch.
