I totally posted the same question when my LO was a newborn. I think the consensus is that if they're hungry, the paci won't work, and it's ok to use it to help them go back to sleep if they'll take it!

I've wondered the same thing about the pacifier for my 6 week old, but I agree with the others - I think if he's really hungry then the pacifier won't work. Sometimes my son will take the pacifier and give a big gulp, then realize there's no milk there, and get upset- then I know he's really hungry!

@Danizaur: At least there are people to ask so you don't have to make yourself crazy thinking about it.

I think you are overthinking things. It sounds like you have his cues figured out. If he really was hungry I don't think he'd just go back to sleep. I agree with you that sleep is important and sometimes we have to do what we can to get it.

I have to say you have a great sleeper and I hope he keeps it up!

If he was really hungry I dont think a paci would help! Bicycling legs helps us the most.

It sounds like you're reading his cues really well and that it's working for you! It sounds like a good routine.

I need some opinions. I'm torn on whether or not I'm doing the right thing.

I EBF T right now (and it's going good!). He's 5 weeks old. He takes a pacifier during the day at times. I use it keep him calm when he's hungry if I can't get to him just yet and when he's fussy/gassy to soothe him. I'm careful to make sure the pacifier doesn't mask nursing cues and I nurse him on demand.

Well he has started sleeping about 6 hours for his first stretch of sleep at night (hallelujah!). He stirs after about 4.5-5 hours fussy and I can hear him trying to wriggle out some farts and they hurt his belly. I give him his pacifier to soothe him back to sleep while he wriggles the farts out, otherwise he will wake up and we will have to do a diaper change/nursing session. If I give him the paci, he goes back to sleep for another hour and a half til he wakes up wanting to eat.

I'm torn because I get another hour and a half of sleep by just popping the paci in his mouth, but I feel like I may just be putting off him needing to eat and messing up his nursing sessions. If he wasn't gassy, I like to think he would sleep even longer but I don't know that for sure. But he really wouldn't go back to sleep if he was really hungry, right? When he wakes up an hour and a half later, there is no paci. He won't have anything but the boob to settle him back to sleep.

I need some clarity. I feel like I'm being selfish by possibly putting off nursing him...but with things like sleep I feel like it's okay to be selfish sometimes. Any opinions are appreciated! What do you all think? I could just be overreacting. You can tell me I'm being completely silly. That would make me feel better.

Bonus question: If anyone has any suggestions to help keep gas away that would be great. I do everything but turn him upside down to burp him about 3 times a feeding with maybe 2 burps and we use gas drops, which help, but not completely. I've tried gripe water but it doesn't seem to help as much as the gas drops.
