I wasn't for a pacifier when DD was first born because I had been told it interfered with breastfeeding. However DD loved to suck and my poor bleeding nipples couldn't take it anymore so we introduced the pacifier (Soothie type like @photojane mentioned). She did really well at holding it in her mouth until she fell asleep at which point she didn't apparently need it anymore. Unfortunately the pacifier only worked until she found her thumb (also stops sucking it once asleep). I miss the pacifier as we are trying to wean her from thumb sucking at 28m and it isn't going in our favor.

I was worried about that so I always took it out of her mouth as soon as she fell asleep so she wouldn't get used to sucking on it while sleeping.

LO loves her pacifier (im already worrying about the struggle to take it away!!), but we take it from her when she falls asleep and she's ok with that. My paci rule is I only give it to her to soothe her when she is upset, not as an anytime thing. She can't keep it in her mouth for too long so we have to help her with that, and so she rarely uses it to fall asleep because I don't want to wake up every 10 minutes to put it back in her mouth. haha

Unless she was awake, the paci falls out of her mouth. All the time, but it doesn't wake her (thankfully)
I know someone who got a Wubanub giraffe and loved it

My LO doesn't use a paci to go to sleep (well, other than me), but I have a friend with a little girl that loves (LOVES) her paci. She tucks the Wubbanub into her LOs swaddle and it holds it in place long enough for her to not mind it falling out of her mouth.

It would fall out multiple times per night until she finally fell asleep. It sucked for a while to keep going back in her room to put it back in, but eventually she learned to keep it in her mouth. It still falls out, but it doesn't wake her up anymore. The other thing we would do is hold her (sometimes) until she fell asleep, gently pull it out, and then put her back in her crib.

i'm not a mama just yet, but have you tried this kind... http://www.babyearth.com/wubbanub-soothie-newborn-pacifier.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&kwid=productads-sku^16894-adtype^PLA instead of the traditional pacifier? they go back a little farther in the mouth. my hospital uses these kind, and they seems to work really well with the newborns.

I didn't want M to use a pacifier for two reasons. 1. The addiction. 2. The possibility of her losing it at night and waking up a thousand times to put it back in.

Well, she loves them. Suck, suck, suck, suck.

And.... #2 has started. HOW do you deal with this??? She's only 7 weeks old and keeps dropping the durn thing at night!
