My son took a pacifier and slept 12+ hour stretches. It almost never fell out when he was sleeping, and if it did, he would put it back in (when he was a little older though, like 8+ months). He was a big guy though and FF, so he didn't need to eat very often since he ate a lot at a time.

@blackbird: haha. I know STTN isn't going to happen for a while but I am so jealous of your good sleeper! ;) Our house isn't designed for kids so it takes me 15-20 seconds before I get to her...probably too much time to put it back in without her waking but I'm going to try!

E was able to put a wubbanub back in her mouth (sort of sloppily) around 5/6 months, which is probably the only reason we kept it around, because she was STTN (sorry!). If that was the only reason she was waking up, and wasn't able to get coordinated FAST (or you could sprinkle like, a dozen plus pacis in the bed, heh), i'd probably just wean her.

Logan is 4.5 months and uses a pacifier. It helps him fall asleep, but he doesn't usually wake when it falls out. He's EBF and usually wakes twice at night to nurse, though he has one 7-8 hour stretch.

ETA: What I did that helped stretch out his sleep was give him the pacifier when he'd wake in the middle of the night. I'd hear him stirring and pop the pacifier in his mouth before he fully woke up. Eventually he stopped waking up at those times and so we were able to lengthen the amount that he slept in the middle of the night.

@catomd00: thanks for the comment! I think it's likely my expectations are too high. It's pretty uncommon for us to be getting even a 4 hour stretch at this point though, and she had been doing that pretty regularly until 4.5 months. I know it will eventually get better though so I'm trying just to power through it :)

My daughter didn't sleep longer then 4-5 hours at 6 months. Around 10 months she started 12 hour stretches but not consistently. At 14 months now, she wakes up 0-2 times a night. We took her pacifier away at 13 months and there was no change better or worse. She didn't even notice. I personally think your los sleep is normal for 6 months and don't think the pacifier is going to be a magic bullet, but it can't hurt to try, I guess!

@miramira: I think a few wakeups to nurse is okay but 5 is not working for me. I have a 2.5 year old to chase around and most days all I can think about is going to bed :( We've tried co sleeping too but it just doesn't work for me because I'm too light of a sleeper.

DS is 6 months and uses a pacifier to get to sleep as well but he rarely wakes up if it has fallen out. However. he does still wake frequently to nurse. I think waking up a few times a night is still normal at 6 months. Our LO has never slept more than a 4hr stretch and even so, it's a rarity. Like @mamasig, we've recently started co-sleeping for most of the night and everyone is much more rested now!

@bushelandapeck: no, formula fed by then. Sorry about all the wake ups! I don't really believe in sleep training - I just wait it out or co sleep. But everyone has to do what works for them!

DS1 used a pacifier until 15 months. It didn't impact his sleep at all. He began STTN at 4 months, and I never had to reinsert it at night after it fell out. Eventually, he learned to find it on his own.

But at around 7 months he began to wake up several times at night for us. That's when we began cosleeping so we could all get rest. The pacifier had nothing to do with his wake ups.

I'm starting to lose my mind...DD is over 6 months old and still waking 3-5 times overnight. She falls asleep on her own but does use a pacifier. She doesn't wake up when it falls out but doesn't put herself back to sleep when she wakes. I'm wondering if I just need to take the pacifier away and let her fuss so she can figure out how to self soothe. I'm okay with her waking once or twice, but the 5 wakings has to stop before I lose it.

If your baby used a pacifier did it impact their ability to sleep longer stretches? If you had to eliminate the pacifier to improve sleep, how did you do it and how long did it take?
