My LO is a pacifier addict and I'm a dentist. I don't even know what to do! It's her lovey and the only thing that comforts her. She's 18 months (almost) and I'm just not ready (or willing) to take it away from her yet. I have no certain plans right now.

We're in the same position too and a few weeks younger than @lovehoneybee's E. I'll join the support club for paci weaning.

@Mamasig: That's actually how we ended up weaning from nursing (he was down to once a day and my supply was low already I think). He was sick and so congested that he couldn't latch on for more than a second or two and just got frustrated and stopped trying. I wasn't pumping at that point, so that ended up. He was still able to fall asleep with a paci, though :(

@stargal: haha ;) I am hoping to just cut the nipple part off when the time comes so that she can still hold it but can't suck on it. I was conflicted between weaning now or after baby and we decided after baby, which ends up being sometime this spring or summer!

I mentioned it in the other post, but we took advantage in a small lull in his interest. With a stuffy nose and a bunch of teeth coming in, he couldn't suck on it. I think it actually started getting on his nerves and he'd fling it in frustration. So I stopped offering it and was surprised and how easily he gave it up. I guess he developed a negative association with it. He was 15 months old at the time. Previously, he had been using all day.

I posted about it a few days ago and we decided just to take it away Thursday night since we had nothing important going on the few days after that. She's done fine. There have been times she's cried/screamed but not as much as I anticipated. I tried poking holes in the pacifier and she didn't notice a difference.

The first night, she went to sleep immediately. The first nap without her pacifier she cried for an hour. It's been variable though with how much she's cried and slept.

I've also made sure to keep telling her what a big girl she is for not using it anymore and making sure she has her stuffed animals for comfort.

She's 19 months today for reference.

A spin-off of hilsy85's thread.

How and when did you wean? How long did it take?

Our pedi told us she'd like to see it completely gone by the time he turns 2, so we have 6 months or so, but I have no idea how to approach it. We've taken it away except during naps/sleep/long car rides. He won't sleep without it. He screams if he wakes up and has dropped it. I'm so nervous about trying to put him to sleep without it...

Any tips?
