LO is 17 months and we just quit the pacifier cold turkey last week. She only got it for naps and bed but I was tired of it falling on the floor at night and waking her up. She has a small blankie that she carries around all the time so it wasn't too bad nixing the paci because she has her lovey for comfort.

We took a similar approach to @Ree723: . He was a little over two? We had been telling him for a week or two what a big boy he is and how sassies (his word for them) are for babies, and he's a big boy now not a baby. Then he started to tell us that sassies are for babies.

I was terrified to actually take it away, so D did it randomly one night (when he was actually home for bedtime) . He put him down, told him he was such a big boy and it was time for sassy to go bye-bye, and that was. No drama, no meltdown, and he slept just fine without it!

I was so worried about this too but it went much better than I expected. We cut them cold turkey at 27 months. He even had holes in the pacifiers he was using and didn't care. Would suck on them anyways.

He asked for it for a couple of days then stopped. We just told him no more pacifier. We did notice an increase in tantrums after that tho. I think because he didn't have his pacifier to help calm him down. Sleep never changed. And his speech has really increased since we took it away (not sure if that is just because of age or because he doesn't have a paci in his mouth all the time).

My 23 month old is obsessed with his. It comforts him, he sleeps well and we don't have any speech issues so we haven't had a reason to take it away yet. And we didn't want to do it surrounding the birth of his baby brother either. Just wish my family would stop commenting on it!

We also did the Santa trick like @NorthStar: said. It worked amazing but I agree that they need to be old enough to understand. He was 27 months. Actually when I just started to mention the Easter Bunny he said "we need to go to the store and get pacis to leave for him so I can get big boy presents." :silly:

We were in the same boat and I kept putting it off as there were so many major life changes occurring! Finally, shortly after her second birthday, I noticed she had chewed a hole in the pacifier (just a small one - not enough to break it off). As she had been the one to do it and would have noticed it working a bit differently, we just left it and got rid of any other pacifiers we had around.

We started talking to her about how she was a big girl and big girls don't sleep with pacifiers anymore. We prepped her for about a week, telling her the pacifier was going to go bye bye, and finally, one night we put her to bed and told her it was time for nuky (pacifier) to go bye bye. She took it out of her mouth, handed it to us, snuggled her lovey, rolled over and went to sleep.

I was certain it was going to be a battle but it was not in the slightest! I think it helped that she had a lovey she was very attached to so she had something else to help soothe her. Good luck!

heh...i've been putting this off, too. I think we'll tackle it this summer. Seems cruel to take it away 6 weeks before the new baby comes. I really wanted it all winter while she was sick since it's our crutch and all

@coopsmama: ha - That's what my DS did - he kept staring and would suck again and the look at it - he was so confused!!! Finally said "I think its broke!" :silly:

eta: I did this slowly - 1st it was daytime paci, then car paci, then DCP paci, and finally night time ones - he never cried!

@NorthStar: I'm not sure my son would totally get that concept yet! He doesn't know anything about Santa haha. But I LOVE the idea for potty training when he's a bit older. :)

@Mamaof2: Per your suggestion Im trying that this morning! He could definitely tell something was weird about it when I handed it back. He keeps staring at it but no frustration which Im happy about - we'll see!

@.twist.: I've been doing that for months! But I think his speech delay is kicking me into action!!

@littlejoy: I'm a wimp, too. I hate frustrating LO over something that isn't a matter of right or wrong. He's also super sneaky so if I take it away and put it on the counter or something he pushes a chair over to get it. And he finds it in drawers, etc. He's not in daycare so I'm on my own with this.

Our LO is 15 months. Starting school has helped, because they only give it to her if she needs it. They're tough, and I'm a wimp, haha.

Our neighbors did exactly what @NorthStar: mentioned, and it worked great for them!!

When our daughter was 27 months, we started suggesting to her that she give Santa her nuki so that other babies could have it. If she did that, Santa would bring her a present. We reinforced that daily and for a few months. Then, when she was 2.5, she did it and never looked back. We were SO surprised as she was like your LO and obsessed/loved her nuk.

We are doing the same thing with potty training..if she goes poopy on the potty, the Easter Bunny will bring her a present. We did it this past weekend and haven't had to use a diaper yet, except for at night. Good luck! It's so hard, but once they are ready, you will know...I'm just glad that we did it on her terms.

Alright, so my 21 month old still uses a pacifier for naps and bedtime and he tries to get away with using it throughout the day and throws a tantrum if I take it away. I really think it's time that we work on weaning him off of it but it's been something I kept putting off because the thought of taking away his beloved binkie stressed me out! :silly: :bummed:

How did you wean your LO off of their binkie? Did you go cold turkey or something else? How old were they? I'm so afraid that this is going to mess up his wonderful sleep!!
