My son used his pacifier until he was 3 years 8 months. He only used it for sleep and was still napping in the afternoon at the time, but basically, what happened was that once we stopped the afternoon nap, he was so tired at night that he fell asleep instantly without the needing to calm himself down.

@MamaCate: Thank you so much for the encouragement!!! We have been talking to her about it, so she knew, but obviously that didn't matter in the moment, haha. I was hoping the hardest part would only last about a week.

@littlejoy: we took the paci away at 3. We talked about it for a while leading up to it, and had DH "take all the pacis to the babies at the hospital" since she was a big girl now. She got a big girl (twin) bed and a big hello kitty toy.

It took about a week to adjust with some hiccups after but I am glad we stick it out. The first few nights were really hard. She cried and cried and told me she just wanted something to suck on. We had brainstormed some "replacement behaviors" to offer like rubbing a blanket or hugging a lovey but none of this really took. I stayed in the room with her to comfort her for a few days and would sing to her only if she was lying still if she had a really hard time.

She is 5 now, falls asleep on her own, and it is truly miraculous. You can do it!!

We've decided to take the pacifier away from our 3.5 year old. She only uses it for sleep at home (she's been without it at school for at least 8 months).

For those of you who have been through paci weaning with an older child, what did it look like? How long before bedtime was easier? (Our child has a diagnosed sleep disorder, so I assume it's not ever going to be totally easy - nap today seemed especially traumatic even though I laid in there with her).

Any tips are appreciated!!
