LOs eat everything cold at school. We have a thermos but I have never used it.

@Anagram: haha me too! So much crap food on the road and we can't always coordinate pit stops with when she's hungry. So it's just as easy to pack the thermos and let her eat when she's hungry! Last time I forgot to pack it and she ate so much chicken nuggets and French fries on the road! Ugh

@regberadaisy: yup, that's what we do! I turn on the electric kettle when I go in to make my coffee. Then I dump the hot water into the thermos and let it sit until my husband comes in later to pack LOs breakfast and heat up her lunch that I packed the night before.

We use it all the time for traveling and stuff, since LO has MSPI and can't really eat on the road.

@Anagram: ooo thanks for letting me know about that bento thermos. So do you pack a snack and a lunch in each container? Or fill the three containers up for each meal?

@2PeasinaPod: thanks for explaining how you guys do it. My LO isn't used to eating meats cold, so not sure if he would, but I guess we can try!

@regberadaisy: good tip!

@Anagram: I was going to suggest the samen. The key to the bento is filling the thermos cavity with HOT water first. Then dump the water and put your compartments in. This way the insulated chamber is already warm.

DS eats everything cold. He also likes most of the things you mention. I fully cook them and then put them in the fridge. They have a fridge at school and it goes right in there and he eats it straight from there.

I use a bento thermos every day--it has two insulated containers and one non-insulated container. I pack LO a hot breakfast and a hot lunch every day with a snack that isn't hot.

The breakfast is SUPER hot, and the lunch is warm. We've been using the thermos a full year now and it's been working great.

My LO doesn't eat stuff like cheese and deli meat, so it's really better for her to eat her foods warm, as they are served at home.

@lady grey: oh, in that case I would just try to have DD eat it cold since it's a small amount. I use a Packit bag for cold items.

@regberadaisy: right, no microwave. It'll have to stay warm at least 4 hours.

@Andrea: so even if your packing a small amount, like half a sausage cut up, you put it in the foogo?

@Mrs. Bee: olive eats every thing cold right from the fridge?

since they don't heat up foods in elementary school, might as well get used to it. we just pack meats (Olive's preschool refrigerates), and she eats it fine. hot dogs, boiled eggs, rotisserie chicken, meatballs, pasta with meat sauce, pepperoni, etc.

@lady grey: I'm assuming everyone has to bring their food so they won't be microwaving? There are insulated lunch containers you can buy. How many hours does it have to stay warm?

How to do you keep it warm? Or do you just have them eat it cold? LO starts preschool/nursery school in the Fall and I will have to pack food for him for the first time. His previous daycare provided all the food. Not looking forward to this. I know he will eat mini meatballs, sausage, hotdogs, chicken nuggets, etc, if I pack them, but how to you keep them at a safe temp?
