@erinbaderin: I saw you ordered a chewy necklace but that was going to get my vote too! My son was a HUGE paci baby and when we took it away at 2.5 he started putting his fingers in his mouth just like the others here. He’s 4.5 now and still asks for the paci on and off 😳 But the necklace has been a decent substitute.

Thanks, all - I did a telemedicine appointment this morning and the doctor said that we’d need both a prescription cream and antibiotics. He also mentioned taking him in to have it drained, but I’m going to take a wait and see approach on that because YIKES for so many reasons!

I’ve also ordered some chewy necklaces for both him and his little brother, who is a thumb sucker.

We used a prescription-strength antibiotic cream for a similar blister on my daughter's finger (also from a finger sucking resurgence over the last couple months) - our doctor was willing to prescribe it via telehealth visit, but I agree that varies so much practice to practice.

The frequent bandaid changes and the cream did deter my daughter from sucking that particular finger for a little bit, but now that it's healed I've noticed she's back at it. I'm going try the chewy necklace suggestion to see if that helps. We've been trying to help her kick this habit anyway, but it seems even more important now!

Another vote for telemedicine. And if that's not an option I would use an antibacterial cream and watch it and if you don't see improvement in 48 hours then I'd go to a doctor.

I bought a chewy necklace when my daughter wouldn't stop putting her fingers in her mouth. It helps satisfy the urge so she wasn't feeling deprived or sneaking behind my back, but it wasn't as satisfying as her fingers so her use of it tapered off eventually. Might be worth a shot? I phrased it like this, "I know putting your fingers in your mouth makes you feel calm. It's called self-soothing and that's great. But your fingers have a lot of germs and also your fingers pushing on your teeth is not healthy for your teeth. If you want to put something in your mouth please use this. Thank you for helping me keep your body healthy." Then after that when I saw her fingers in her mouth I would prompt her to go wash her hands and then go get her chewy necklace. I also used one for my son for a while. Having to stop what they were doing and go wash their hands every time their fingers were in their mouth was a pretty strong deterrent because it was annoying!

I agree with above to telemedicine if you can - if they don’t have a system set up maybe you can request a call from your pedi. They might have a specific medicine to use that would work better or an rx option they could call in. Willingness to prescribe from afar seems very dependent on the doctor!

@erinbaderin: I took my son to the doctor a few months ago for an infected blister on his foot. We were given a super strong antibiotic cream and we put it on twice daily and kept bandaids on it. So maybe try that? I might call to ask the pediatrician about it but yes I would be wary of making an appointment at the moment!

My 3 year old has a persistent blister on his thumb from where he sucks it. It’s been there for over a year at least but it’s never looked like your picture. I assume that has pus under it. Dr. Google says you should see a doctor for an infected blister but I probably wouldn’t. I wonder if you could do a telemedicine call.

My 4.5 year old puts his fingers in his mouth or chews on his shirt collar while watching a show too. I bought chewie tubes and just offer that every time he is going to watch something or if I notice he has them in his mouth. I don’t even really say anything, I just hand it to him and he’s happily chews that instead. Maybe that would help? I would keep the blister clean with a waterproof bandaid and keep offering an appropriate alternative.

My son is 6, and he sucks his fingers - the index and middle on his left hand. We started working on quitting when he started kindergarten and he was doing pretty well until the pandemic started and he regressed a fair amount. He tends to do it when he’s zoning out watching tv, but it’s not totally mindless - he knows he’s not supposed to and sometimes we’ll catch him checking to see if we’re looking before he does it. We’re trying really hard to be nonjudgemental, remind him to take them out, and reward him when he doesn’t do it, which worked well for a few days and now doesn’t. We’re working on new plans to motivate him (ideas about quitting finger sucking also welcomed!) but in the meantime he’s developed this very disgusting blister on his finger and I’m wondering if I need to take him to a doctor, which I’m super reluctant to do for obvious reasons. So, thoughts? Can I just put an antibacterial cream and a bandaid on it? Or is this infected and he needs antibiotics?

Sorry for the novel and also the gross photo.
