I love the idea of a gold metallic, but one that runs a little warmer/rose toned than a bright yellow gold. I'd just do the part of the ceiling next to the light fixture. I would leave the rest of the ceiling a white tone to be a clean bright contrast.

I like the idea of blue walls in the dining room. BM Slate Blue would be pretty and be a nice contrast to the gray walls upstairs. If you like a lighter more robin's egg type color, Valspar’s Carolina Inn Club Aqua is more airy. Living room I like a neutral khaki color. I adore our main living color - SW Grecian Ivory because it warms up the house but isn't a noticeable beige.

@youboots: it's hard to tell if the wood is warm toned, when we redid our hardwoods, we began with red oak, which already has a warm tone, so we specifically picked a stain without red in it.

We have sw Roman column on our first floor, with dark wood trim, and I love it; it almost glows and really lets the woodwork shine. The rooms with this color are southern exposure, though, so I'm sure that contributes.

@looch: I'm not sure if I like warm or cool. I just know it when I see it. @coopsmama: it's not the best photo but our floors are a similar color upstairs to the molding downstairs.

@Mamaof2: sound advice.

I'm open to the idea of doing an exterior color besides grey. We are going to go to some of the wicked expensive old Portland neighborhoods with craftsman homes and take photos of exterior paint. My painter said we can go up to 5 tone. Our house is a monster, I'm so happy I found someone to take it on.

@avivoca: @raintreebee: I'm sold for the dining room and possibly the living area. Thank you!!! It's perfect.@turkeylurkey: Good advice. Im thinking a med-light grey may be better suited for downstairs. @looch: Thank you so much, once we paint all we will have left to do is shutters. I'm excited to be done. I'm a little bummed it's so trendy. I love grey and always have. Our upstairs was painted 3 years ago when people gave me the side eye for it. I love the idea of gold- I'm thinking the ceiling squares may be a possibility.

I love your home!

Do you like warm tones or cool tones? I feel like gray is very trendy right now and while I also have a ton of it in my home, it's EVERYWHERE and I am beginning to tire of it. I'd do a cool beige rather than ivory, but that's just my preference.

As for the metallic gold, I think it could work, especially if there is a warm cast to the wood...what about a rose gold?

I like light house shadows by valspar. Soft blue with a hint of gray. Also, the trend here is to just go a shade lighter or darker from room to room. So if you really like the gray upstairs go a shade or two lighter or darker on the same color paint card.

My favorite blue is Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore. It's very ethereal, almost pearlescent and it looks great with brown. Our living room is that color with a dark brown accent wall.

I don't think metallic gold will look good with that shade of wood stain so I vote a light red robin eggs blue for the dining room. We have many houses in our city in that same style and same kind of wood detail. The houses are generally very dark because of the dark wood and smaller rooms so I would personally do light colors.

@youboots: Our house is 90 years old and it is definitely a gamble, but we love it so much. Your house is beautiful!! The neutral the previous owners painted most of the main living area is kind of a yellow beige which I've always hated but it doesn't bother me enough to want to change.

@shellio: thank you so much. Right now the exterior of the house is yellow and most of the inside was yellow- but I guess it is not a nice neutral.@agold: thanks so much. It's really fun but I doubt we will ever buy 100-year-old house again.@coopsmama: no someone in the past had painted all the trim upstairs white. But I think it would be lovely.

Do you have that dark wood trim upstairs with your light gray paint? If so, I'd love to see a picture. We have that same trim color throughout our home and I'm toying with painting a few rooms a gray color but haven't seen many examples online of the trim with gray and it worries me a bit.

I like the idea of the blue in the dining area. As for having too much gray, I'd say that with any neutral color, no one will notice that it is the same all over the house. If you love gray, I say go for it. If it is a light neutral color, I don't think your buyers will give it a second thought (when you move, you mentioned less than 10 years) because they can easily paint over a light color. We have light neutral colored walls everywhere and it has not been an issue with our kids who are now 1 and 3. I wholeheartedly agree with saving the extra paint, also make sure it is clearly labeled (living room, bedroom, etc) so if you need to touch up in the future you can easily find the exact color.

Benjamin Moore Wickham Gray is my go-to color. Light but not white, gray but not bland, a soft blue undertone. It's gorgeous and makes any space look beautiful, especially with natural wood. Plus I think it would really complement your upstairs and exterior colors as well.

I'm so boring with paint colors, but we have light walls and haven't had an issue so far with our two year old, in terms of it getting dirty.

We DO have an issue were she shook the pressure mounted gate so much that it peeled the paint off the walls, so I would say definitely save the leftover paint for touch ups down the line! (Ours was painted when we moved in and we don't have the paint or even the color to match. )

We are going to have the interior of our 1910 home painted this fall and the exterior done in the spring. Our upstairs is all light grey (On the rocks by SW) I feel like if we did downstairs the same color it would be too much. Especially since we are going to likely paint the exterior French grey with white trim. I would do all grey since I like it, but we will likely only be in our home for 10 years or less.

Right now the living and dining room are a light yellow. I'm thinking cream in the living area and a historical robin egg type blue in the dining or metallic gold (it's a small space for paint because of the woodwork. For those of you that have small children are light colors a bad idea? Do you have any other suggestions? I don't like yellow or reds. Our couch is green, so no green. I like blue but am not sure if it would look good in the living space. I'm a little stumped.
