@Badgermom - the contract says he would use "latex acrylic or oil based paint (Benjamin Moore Advance - it's a paint with one fifth the VOC of standard oil paint - much less smell than other paints.)" So it's deffintly better then it could be but I hate to think of having her (potentially) breathing ANY fumes in in her first week of life but I also realize I've entered a neurotic stage of my pregnancy... I think I just started to feel like a terrible parent when I was leaning towards not objecting and someone suggested we paint around his dog's travel schedule.

@cityliving: Are you sure it's oil based? They make water based alkyd paint now for use on trim and such.

Thanks ladies! Unfortunately it sounds like they will be using an oil based (alkyd) paint on the trim, doors, and railing so now I'm back to freaking out. Two of the neighbors asked for a heads up so they could move their dogs so now I'm unsure what to do since no time seems good for this right now (and was already freaking out about pretty much everything right now). Ack.

They painted out hallways when LO was a few months old and I was super stressed about it. But as long as they don't use an oil based paint I think you're fine. I put rolled up towels under our doors while they were working just in case (for odor and dust), but we really didn't need them.

I painted and plastered our nursery when pregnant (DH did any sanding but I was still in the house just not in the room). If weather permits I'd have the windows open in your place and you can always direct a fan at the front door to blow the air out rather than draw it in from the hall. But I wouldn't worry about it.

I really don't think this is a big deal or anything to worry about since it's not in your actual apartment.

Hi All,

I was curious what this group thought about paint fumes in the 3rd trimester or the first week of a baby’s life.

My co-op just informed us that they are planning to paint the hallways in 2 weeks when I will be 37 weeks pregnant and the job is expected to take 10-12 days. My doctor has implied she does not want me to go over 40 weeks so likely this will be the environment I will either be breathing in the last week of my pregnancy or the baby will be moving through when we bring her home.

I have already requested that we only use no-VOC paint (with a preference for Benjamin Moore Natura). The building is only 8 units, so I think I could get them to delay this by a few weeks if necessary but I don't want to be that difficult if it's not a huge deal since it's not IN our apartment and minimal sanding (which would stress me out about lead dust) is expected. Thoughts?
