@evansjamie: @runnerd: yes, we have a neutral gray upstairs and it reads really light so I had my husband use it on the walls of our walk-out basement. It reads super dark down there and we have dark wood floors picked out. I'm hoping once we install decent lighting it will read lighter (although there's a wall of windows so it gets lots of natural light).

Ugh, I am so with you on that. I painted my master bath and bedroom the same color, and they look completely different. It bothers me to no end, but not so much that I want to repaint the room all by myself (I was painting over purple, so it took three coats of primer and two coats of paint to get rid of that purple).

What brand/color is number 2? We used Benjamin Moore Sea Salt in our main living area and with white trim, it really looks nice.

LOL. I know how you feel. I tried the color samples like that and still got it all wrong. I've had to re-paint the master and dining room. The master bedroom color made it for 2 years cause I was too lazy to do it again after it took me 8-9 hours. The dining room was SO bad I redid it less than a month later. It's really amazing how no matter how big a patch you paint, it still looks totally different once you do the whole room and are completely surrounded by the new color.

That seems tricky, is the current color the same on all for walls? I hate extra steps but this situation might be a good time to use a primer.

It is hard! It looks like you had some color on your walls to start with? Adding color over color can really skew the results . . . as can lighting and flooring. :)

we are still trying to figure out what color to paint our master bedroom, and i just had to post this pic. all our samples were looking horrible when we painted them on the wall, so we painted them on two color walls, plus on some white poster board (where they look normal), and they look completely different each time. it's crazy how the current wall color distorts the way it looks on the wall!!!

here's a pic of the two samples we bought, and how they looked on the wall. paint picking sucks!
