In the end what worked was painting a lot of samples on the wall (and on different walls in the room) so we could see what the tones in each shade were, using painters tape to outline the edge of each sample so we weren't actually looking at the contrast between the white and existing paint, and spending a lot of time googling what people had to say about each color. For the longest time I thought I wanted BM White Dove or something more grey, but we ended up with BM Monterey White and love it so much with our mahogany floors that we painted most of our first floor that color. And...sometimes you just don't know until you paint an entire room! There's a shade called Spanish White that looked great on the swatch and was almost identical to Monterey White, but somehow looks plain old yellow in person. We have 6 weeks or so until we close but once we do, will only have one weekend to paint. We're going to go to Home Depot at some point to look at colors and get some sample jars. I tired to pick out white for cabinets, and once I got a pile together, I was shocked that some of the colors I thought was white were actually pink or yellow or green against a more 'pure' white. But make sure you take several sample colors home and see how they actually look on the wall and in different lighting. </p> <p>When we first painted, I went to Lowe's picked out the swatch I liked and said yep this is it! They've either come stark white or, like our current place, have paint that luckily matches our decor. The new place will be a mix - there are some current colors we like and will leave as is but the bedrooms will need to be painted. I think the master will be a cream/light tan with a darker blue accent wall. The second bedroom will be an office until there is a LO so we want to keep it neutral for now. Have you painted with white/cream/other neutral colors before? Is there a good approach to picking the "right" color? Are certain paint brands better than others? Share tips please! </p>
