Not very. I would have some paleo meals but if i wanted cheese on a food, I would just do it. I would be real good about a paleo breakfast and lunch and dinner some days and some days, not so much. I eat so much greek yogurt now, I think i'd end up more primal vs paleo.

I see eating Paleo as a spectrum, and I always did my best to inch closer to the letter of the law - within what was reasonable and sustainable for ME. (I talk in the past tense because since becoming pregnant I'm on basically an all-carb diet.. sad). That being said, I eat beans and dairy but was most strict about cutting out sugar, bread, wraps, basically refined grains of any kind, rice, potatoes, etc.

Basically you know the rules, so do your best to follow them, but it's up to you how "perfect" you want to be.

I've traveled all over the spectrum with Paleo. I got particularly interested in it when I started Crossfit, and I would say I gradually got to a point where I was eating almost 100%. I think I dropped gluten first, then legumes and other grains, then most dairy. I always ate rice. I was never that strict with sugar - just tried to not eat too many sweets. Right now I'm in the first trimester and having major food aversion so I've been off paleo for about 3 weeks. At 9w3d I'm starting to feel a little less gross so I may try to ease back into it.

I also don't always buy grass fed and organic. I buy the best quality food I can afford - and I recognize that eating whole food, even conventionally grown, will always be a step in the right direction when compared to processed, packaged food.

I think it's important to not get too hung up on "perfect," and to recognize that you have a lifetime of eating ahead of you. There will be times when you're compliant and times when you're not, and neither makes you a good or bad person. For me, at the very least cutting gluten makes me feel really good, so that is reason enough to keep doing it (or start doing it again once I can eat something other than toast!).

I do a modified paleo diet. I moreso follow Nourishing Traditions/Weston A Price.

Here are the differences:

I eat legumes as long as they are soaked
I will eat grains if there are soaked/sprouted
I will eat dairy if its raw

For example today I had stuffed squash (lentils, black beans, onion, grass fed organic beef), and a grilled cheese made with sprouted wheat bread, raw cheddar cheese, and kerrygold butter.

I cheat a bit too. It can be really hard to stick to it. But for the most part I do an ok job . I have loved cutting out refined sugar!! My body loves it too and now rejects refined sugar. So much so that I get sick or get migraines if I eat too much sugar. I love cooking and baking with raw honey and pure maple syrup. As a result I've found I eat less of those "sugars" and enjoy them more. I have some paleo brownies that are DELICIOUS and way better than normal brownies IMO!

I was a lot more strict when I wasn't pregnant! There is no one definition of paleo. You can make it whatever works best for you.

I found this blog post super helpful when I found myself getting down about not being the "perfect" paleo: http://balancedbites.com/2012/06/paleo-perfectionism.html

So I am on day 2 of a Paleo-ish diet. I'm cutting out all grains and refined/processed food, and cutting back a lot on dairy. I just did a big haul at Whole Foods and got all grass-fed, organic food.

Still, I feel like I am not being 100% Paleo. I've already eaten a small amount of cheese as a snack, and had coffee with milk & Splenda. (I did put some Stevia packets in my purse as a better alternative going forward.) I also am not really worried about the oils I use in moderation - for example, I had soup for lunch that I'm sure had vegetable oil in it.

I mostly feel like I am making positive changes no matter what and that's what is important, but I also am a kind of obsessive person, and so I am feeling like I should obey "the letter of the law." Just curious - how many of you are able to follow the Paleo diet 100%?
