my friend just had thrush and used Silverette cups ( silver is a natural anti fungal and antibacterial) and said that they worked in 24 hours! i know they can be used also as a preventative measure :silly:

@jmarionsmith: Yea, itchy nipples, painful to nurse. You'll know. I think with the antibiotics there's a chance that you can get it, but no guarantee. So, don't stress too much unless you get it! I think there are few cases like mine where it's never ending and it is normally pretty easy to clear up! :D

Fingers crossed you don't even have to deal with it. :goodluck:

@.twist.: oh my goodness that sounds terrible!!

i don't have it now, i'm just super paranoid because lo is on an antibiotic, though i'm not sure how much more it puts us at risk. i definitely won't be using anything medicated unless i for sure do get it.

by "thrushy" do you mean super itchy?

thank you for all the advice!

@jmarionsmith: I don't remember NOT having thrush while nursing. I feel like my entire breastfeeding experience was completely tainted because of thrush! And yes, monistat cream is safe to put on and then nurse later without washing off (only use it if you feel thrushy). Do you have thrush right now or are you just worried you'll get it?

My dd was on an antibiotic for sn ear infection and neither of us took probiotics or got thrush. She was 7 months though...

She did get a yeast diaper rash though. At the first signs of it I used a mixture of lotrimin, 40% zinc oxide and maalox and it cleared right up!

AIR. Let your boobies air out. lol. I sat for many hours a day without a top/bra on (if you have that luxury, I was indoors in the winter, so no where to go and no one to see!).

You can also use Monistat cream on your nipples (if they start feeling thrushy) and it's safe for babe too.

I took grapefruit seed extract (you can get it on amazon and probably at a health food store like whole foods) and I think it worked to prevent thrush. Also I think my prenatal (rainbow light) has probiotics so I was sure to take that religiously as well. And I also ate 2 yogurts per day and changed my nursing pads very frequently (I leak a lot so I think this was crucial). Good luck!!

@littlebittyhouse: ugh, from everything I've read, they are the worst! I'm really hoping to avoid it, or at least make it less severe with these early measures! thanks for that great advice!

The vinegar worked well for us - I put it on and let it air dry. I kept a seperate laundry basket for 'thrush' laundry - basically anything my milk touched. I rotated and wore a white nursing tank or bra 24/7 so that I could bleach and wash it in hot water daily. Good Luck! Yeasty beastys are the worst!

@jmarionsmith: I also use milk of magnesia on my nipples to help with the stabbing/burning. That I did make sure to wash off.

I never did the probiotics.

You don't have to wipe the vinegar. Most seemed to have gone away by my next nursing session and she never minded.

Make sure you wash everything including nursing bras in hot water!

DD (10 weeks) has been so, so sick and it turns out she has an ear infection which unfortunately meant she had to start an antibiotic. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before now, 5 days into taking the antibiotic, that I need to be concerned about thrush. So now I'm freaking out.

I've literally read every thread posted in HB about thrush but I still have some questions.

1) I know we both need to start on a probiotic. Since we are already 5 days in I'd like to start us ASAP. I've read that I can just break open an adult capsule and dip a wet finger in the powder to put in LO's mouth. So is any brand OK? Does anyone recommend a specific brand, that can be bought locally (Target, Walgreens, etc)?

2) I know once you have thrush it is recommended to wipe my nipples with a water/vinegar mixture after LO nurses. I'm thinking of doing this now as well. Do I need to clean off the vinegar (I assume it wouldn't taste good) before LO nurses again? Just with a wet paper towel?

Any other suggestions to prevent us getting thrush?

(I'm maybe overreacting, it's pretty much what I do, but it will help ease my anxiety if I know I'm doing something instead of just waiting to see what happens.) Thanks so much!
