@wonderstruck: Total needle phobe here too. I always have to look away (or lots of talking to distract me) for draws at my OB appts and now get the pleasure of testing because of GD. It helps that you don't actually see the needle when it pricks you. It just stings for a second. Hopefully you can work something out with the MD.

I'm a total needle phobe -- but finger sticks aren't nearly as traumatic (though obviously you have to do them more often). I only have done them to test glucometers but I think worst case scenario you could have your husband prick you without nausea. Hopefully your MD has better news for you than you think!

I hope your doctor decides you're fine.

You might not be as bothered by the glucose monitoring as you think. It's more like a pin, not a needle, you don't have the whole anticipation of going somewhere to have it done, and then sit there and wait, and then see the needle. It just looks pretty benign, and then pokes you, super shallow, and super quick, and you never even have to see the pointy part. I found it way different than a needle, but I'm not needle phobic, so maybe there's no difference to you...

@wonderstruck: The GD nurses are like the super nicest nurses I have ever meet. :) the spent hours with me to get me to understand what I need to do for my diet and how prick myself in a way that is the least painful.

Also they reassured me that IF I need to go on insulin that they will show me how to do that in the least painful way too. It's actually not been that bad. Plus most likely you only have to deal with it till your baby is born. Which is a very short part of your total life... well that's how I think of it. :D

I will talk to my doctor about all of this tomorrow and see what he says and thinks. But I really really appreciate the feedback and opinions and stuff, if anyone has something to add, please do! For some reason googling about this stuff was making me freak out even worse, but talking to you ladies about it helps calm me a bit.

I would suggest skipping the 3 hour and going for monitoring or just being treated for GD. But yes this will mean needle pricks up to 4 times a day. The needle pricks are in the side of your finger (no need to get a vein). It does sting, but you won't even see the needle (other than when you have to change it).

Alternatively, if you can tolerate a blood draw (without the glucose or fasting) you can have your A1C drawn which will also give your OB information about if you have GD.

@wonderstruck: I HATEDDD needles with a passion, like I would hyperventilate and cry every time (it doesnt help that I have awful veins and I get stuck wayyy too many times). Then, I had a miscarriage and had to have my hcg levels monitored as they fell (for almost 2 months!) and it helped me get over the needle phobia. Good thing too because when I got pregnant again, I had GD. No joke, it took me over an hour to prick myself the first time because I was terrified, but it's honestly not bad at all!! I did it 2-3 times a day for 3 months and I promise, it becomes no big deal. If I can do it, anyone can!

@wonderstruck: I have taken the 3 hour test three times over two pregnancies. I had a really, really difficult time with it the first two times...my blood sugar levels crashed and I almost passed out (final numbers were 39 at the first test and 47 at the second test). This time was better but it's a different pregnancy. If you've had such trouble with the 1 hour test it might be worth it to do the glucose monitoring.

@wonderstruck: I was the worst needle phobic ever. Then I went through IVF and got over it. But, seriously, it's a tiny prick for the glucose monitoring. It pinches for half a second, I promise!

@wonderstruck: I'm actually pretty scared of needles too... but in no way as sever as you.. I have not fainted over it... just kind of don't like seeing it.

I was actually surprised by myself that after the first two pricks to monitor my blood I was pretty over the needle part. The needle moves so fast and it happens so fast after you press the button that I personally don't mind. It does sting a little sometimes.

That being said... I think 153 is actually pretty borderline. I was 173 and failed my 3 hour test. I think you should go for the 3 hour test. :D I think you will pass.

@wonderstruck: talk to your OB about it.

I bombed my one hour test. My glucose was 189, I think, and they wanted to see under 130. I accidentally fasted too which made the results seem even worse!

I want to say I was 25 or 26 weeks when I had the one hour test done. I thought such a high number for sure meant I had GD. My OB said (I think!?) if the number was over 200 or I was 30 weeks she'd send me straight to MFM and treat me for GD.

She have me the option of the three hour test (whih I absolutely dreaded) or using as glucometer for a week. It sounded like more trouble than anything else so I opted for the glucose test.

I did both of mine at Quest and was surprised to see that they had a private waiting area for the glucose test patients. It was a cool, dim room with a tv and wifi and two recliners. I felt light headed and dizzy both times, but laying down in the cool room helped. They also let me drink water throughout the test that made a difference for me.

Good luck!!

@swedishfish: @grizz: My DH asked the same thing, and honestly I would way rather make dietary changes than go through the three hour test! But from what I understand, if they just treat me like I have GD, that usually involves having to monitor your blood sugar through finger pricks on a regular basis. Is that not true? It's all totally foreign to me because last time I was never able to make it through the 1 hour test without getting sick, and they just gave up and assumed I didn't have it since baby and me were both gaining weight appropriately.

I finally successfully completed by glucose test today - I've attempted it a few times in the past couple of weeks, but I am a total needle phobic and always ended up vomiting, which makes the results inaccurate and they would have to send me home and tell me to come back another day. So I finally did it today! Managed to not vomit until after they had poked me. Was super careful about what I ate/drank beforehand (basically nothing except water.) Well, my results just posted, and they're high at 159. Cutoff is at 135.

I'm a wreck. I don't see how I can possibly go through the three hour test. I can guarantee that I will get sick and vomit, possibly even pass out (it's happened before when I was getting blood work done.) I know I'm freaking out in advance since my doctor hasn't even told me I need the three hour test yet..but I just know he's going to tomorrow. And I'm a total basket case.
