I had Panorama done with my last baby. It wasn't covered by insurance even though I have a history of chromosomal abnormality (m/c due to turner syndrome). My MFM told me the most I'd be billed was $100. The blood draw was back in October 2016, my daughter is now 13 months old, and I've never even gotten a bill 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well, I guess this thread pretty much sums it up that this like everything else in healthcare has just zero transparency! (In the US at least)

@pachamama: Yes, for turners. We decided not to do an amnio and everything looked ok at our anatomy scan. Definitely stressful though! The tests are much more accurate for trisomy I believe.

@bhbee: My test was QNatal (so not Panorama but NIPT). I am not AMA. The full charge for it was $550, and had I not met my deductible for the year yet I would have paid $195 out of pocket. Because I had, I only paid $37. We have a PPO.

@bhbee: YES, had both babies in Boston. Excellent care... But yeah, had two good employers that had great insurance plans... I wonder if there is a difference, I would think it would be employer based, but I guess they would adjust their plans per state... bummer.

Did you speak to your local rep for panorama? Call your obs office and ask who their rep is. I had to do this also. I had a bill for $7000, negotiated insurance payment of $600 and even though it would apply to my deductible (I have a hdhp) I still called and the cash rate was $250. So even though they had “billed insurance” it didn’t matter since I hadn’t paid the patient responsibility yet.
Good luck. It’s so annoying. I didn’t receive a bill with my first kid (United healthcare, not AMA) and did with my second (cigna, AMA)

@hellobeeboston: i don’t know if you’re still in boston but we had way better insurance when we lived there!! I think the cost for my first was $500 (besides premiums of course). Since moving to Texas we’ve spent so so many thousands on healthcare. I don’t know how much is different employers vs state issues.

I was AMA and it was free for me, but my entire pregnancy, labor and delivery only cost me my co-pay which was $250.

Never got a bill the first time but we had a positive (though incorrect) result for something. So I think insurance covered it bc of that (wasn’t ama) but I didn’t ask any questions!

Didn’t do it for second baby.

I’ve had it done twice, both times because of AMA. The first time, my previous insurance covered everything except maybe $100, no problem. I forget which particular company did the test that time. The second time, I was told it would be covered, and then MaterniT 21 sent me a bill for $1100 and the lab that did the blood draw sent one for $700. I asked about this and was told that Blue Cross deemed the procedure experimental and therefore wouldn’t cover it. I had to ask both providers to appeal the denials, and I’m still waiting for the verdict. Oh, and neither of those numbers is what I’d been told I’d have to pay if it was out of pocket.

#1- was not AMA. Was not covered by insurance so billed the full amount ($2000), when I called Verifi directly, they lowered it to like $700 for me to pay out of pocket.
#2- AMA. Covered, I think cost $160. However, the Spina Bifida etc. blood draw, while covered had a copay of $450.

Following. I don't have a great answer b/c I miscarried but was one day from getting it. With #2 I was not AMA... I talked to the sales guy (Nate? Nick? for the northeast) and he said after all the appeal BS or whatever process you have to go through, it'd be like $300-$600. If that helps.
I think being AMA insurance was gonna try to cover it. There is NO good answer anywhere and it seems everyone pays a different price. Lack of transparency for sure. But sure is our medical system.

We’ve done it twice and I’ve never paid anything out of pocket. Or if I did it was so minimal we didn’t even notice (like less than $100).

I think we paid $160-ish (without filing with insurance and I was not AMA, so not covered) when we had it done in January 2017. They were offering the low price to practices that contracted with them at that time and supposedly the program ended in December 2016 but they extended it a few months. My OB told me that the reason they were ending the program was to try to get insurance to start covering the test for everyone and the only way to do this is to force everyone to go through insurance. Apparently by offering the discount there is no reason for insurance to ever start covering it.

it is so hard to find good info about this online, and I have the feeling they're telling everyone different things, so thought it could be good to collect info for future reference!

I took the test in January and just got my final bill. I'm AMA. For the trisomy part of the test, they billed $3000, my insurance (UHC) adjusted that to $693 to my deductible (so technically covered), then when I called and asked for the cash price they offered $449. They tried to tell me I couldn't have the cash price since they already billed my insurance but they always give in if you push . . . seems so shady. I'm wondering if I could have pushed for a lower price too.

They also did the microdeletions test and tried to bill $5000 but my insurance refused to pay. I think they even disputed it on my behalf because I got a letter about it! But my bill from natera just takes it off so I figure they're just seeing what they can get from insurance on that part, I would not have opted for that part if I had to pay for it.

what was your experience?
