i did paper for the first because i was excited and i enjoy doing them : ) they're so pretty! i'm glad i did it. i probably would have preferred them for second birthday, but the time just got away from me until i felt like i had to go with email. so i did paperless post, which is great in its own right and feels pretty special to me.

I made a photo card invite for the first bday even though it was only for family. I just wanted to! I haven’t done anything but a text invite since. We haven’t done a party yet where we invited anyone but family.

We did emails and texts for the first two because we were just inviting friends and family. Once we started inviting daycare friends then I did paper invites.

We texted a digital invite...still got the looks without the hassle. This was family only though so for a larger group I would do evites.

I think paper invites are great, just make it easy on the guests to RSVP electronically.

We did paper invites for her first bday only. It’s a big milestone! We haven’t had a bday party beyond immediate family since then, so no paper invites after that (3rd bday this weekend). I like that we have it as a keepsake.

I sent out paper invitations because they were so cute and I loved them. But they were a totally unnecessary expense; word of mouth would have been just fine, especially if its just family. I sent them mostly for my own personal satisfaction.

I know there are alternatives but I prefer paper invites! I love to design invitations, holiday cards etc. and it is fun to send and then get texts when people receive them. I put invites on our fridge when we get them and it is nice to have a physical reminder of upcoming events.

I say go for it, especially for a 1st birthday!!!

I love paper invitations! Also good for the baby book
I try to get a digital version on Etsy which is pretty cheap and then print at a local print shop which usually runs less than $5. Then you also can send the digital if some people wouldn’t appreciate the mailing, but you have options.

I don't think they are necessary, but we really wanted to go above & beyond for that first birthday, so we did paper invites and had a whole theme. For subsequent birthdays, an e-mail or a text worked!

We did paper for the older crowd too (in our culture, first bday is a big deal with lots of guests) and online invites for our friends and younger crowd. With that being said, it was a simple paper photo invite that I spent very little on

We sent paper invites to the older crowd (grandparents, our aunts and uncles, etc.) and used a FB invite for our generation. Cut down the number of paper invites we needed to order but still gave us a memento to hang onto.

I like using paperless post--it's email/online so easy to keep track of (easy to add to my online calendar and look up when I forget details) but still has pretty designs. Most kid birthday invites we get use it, evite, or lately Punchbowl has been popular

I agree they are completely unnecessary but I love stationary and tend to send more items than others. You can totally get away with an email or FB invite, especially based upon your families normal patterns. It is an added expense that does add up.

Like you we still send holiday cards and did a birth announcement for our son.

We did email/text message invitations for my sons' first birthdays. It would have just been an extra unnecessary expense for us, but I can totally see the appeal - and I still enjoy getting actual invitations in the mail. Honestly, I'd just do what you want to do - if you found the perfect invitation and it doesn't break the budget, I think you should go for it!

I'm starting work on my DD's 1st birthday party (which seems impossible, really). In searching, I found some paper invitations that are freaking adorable and on theme. However, in thinking through it practically, I'm not sure that paper invites make sense.

Most of my family's parties are communicated about through group email, and my husband's family pretty exclusively uses word of mouth to communicate about get-togethers (only exception being his cousin's baby shower last year; she sent paper invites). My husband and I have historically sent out more things via USPS than everyone else; we have been the only ones to send out birth announcements, moving announcements, or even Christmas cards for either side.

Am I overthinking this? Are paper invites just an extra, unnecessary expense? Also adding a poll because I'm super interested in what the hive as a group has done.
