I'm having mine put in in 2 weeks and I still don't have my period. They never mentioned anything about it. I am bf'ing so I'd die if they made me wait!

I had mine put in before my period returned. I have a high cervix that moved away from her when my midwife was inserting it so she had to literally grab it with this sharp little instrument but the actual insertion was not bad. I had period-like cramps for a few hours that night and some bleeding from the clamps but so far, so good and TOTALLY worth it not to have to use condos or HBC (which doesn't agree with me at all).

@Mrs. High Heels: seriously! I tried to take the mini pill at around 3 mos pp, I think I barely lasted a week because I just could not be consistent with it!

I got a Mirena put it at 14 weeks pp, and I still haven't gotten my period. It did hurt for a split second, like a bad period cramp and then it was done. My OB told me it would have hurt a lot more if I hadn't had a baby.

I had Mirena inserted at 10 wks pp. It did hurt A LOT, but I think that was due to a combination of factors, like having a very high cervix and a c-section delivery. My dr. had to insert it under ultrasound guidance.

I had Paragard and they inserted it right away. But apparently I am sensitive to copper because I developed arthritis-like pain in my knees and my hair started falling out majorly. I had it removed after about two months because it just wasn't working well for me. It did hurt some (the insertion and removal) but it wasn't terrible pain. About like a shot, maybe? I also don't trust myself to take the mini-pill, and depo messed with my supply when I took it before I was pregnant with Lowly. We've decided we're going to be done, so Eric is planning to have a vasectomy some time soon, until then we've just been using condoms.

I had my Mirena put in at 7 weeks PP. My OB perscribed a pill for me to take vaginally to make it easier to insert the Mirena. My period didn't come back until 9 months PP. It didn't hurt at all to put it in either :)

@SAHM0811: Ok that's what I thought - thank you! I don't trust myself to take the mini pill at the exact same time every day... I can't even remember which day is which at this point.

@photojane: Oh ok, glad to know other doctors are the same. Maybe my doctor is just on the ultra conservative side. I did schedule an appointment with my PCP, but my appointment isn't until June (she's really popular and fully booked til then!).

Yep, doc won't put in my Mirena until I've had a period. I didn't ask why... I just figured it was a hormonal thing since I'm not breastfeeding. I guess not. I'm about to start my period, so I won't have to wait, but maybe you could go to your regular doctor? I'm pretty sure GP's can do IUDs too. If not, maybe you can find another OBGYN who would be willing to do it.

Nope... Didn't have to wait for my period for Mirena. And in my experience, insertion of it was barely anything more than the uncomfortableness of a Pap.

It was my understanding though that IUD insertion is more painful if you've never had kids. And after having your first child, it's more likely to be a quicker and less painful procedure. Never heard about the waiting for your period theory...

If you do go on the mini-pill, just be sure to take it at the same time every day. Effectiveness goes way down when administration times vary. I think that's why it's success rate is so bad.

I just went in for my 6-week check today and I asked about wanting to insert Paragard. My ob basically told me he can't/won't insert it until my period returns. I was really surprised by that answer as I never heard that before - is that true??

When I asked why not... he said my cervix needs to be open for him to insert it or else it will hurt a lot. When I asked about Mirena, he said the same thing. Ugh... that means I'm going to have to stick with condoms for awhile because I don't trust the mini pill - I know way too many people who've gotten pregnant while on it!

I have no idea when my period will return since I'm exclusively breastfeeding right now. When I was breastfeeding my first, I didn't get a period until my LO was already 13-months!

If you've gotten paragard or mirena before, did you have to wait til your period came back or were you able to get it right away?
