What doesn't make sense is that my little research on the subject seems to indicate the law affects students aged 6 to 16.

If this kid really is 5, he doesn't even qualify under this law... so WTF?

ETA: A LOT of this story doesn't make sense to me, but this is just the first part of it that doesn't make sense.

@Adira: well I guess that's good. Maybe it's my very very pregnant state but I just can't even read about it. Too upsetting to me.

@Canoli: According the article, the video doesn't actually show him being paddled - they are attempting to but he's fighting it so much, they aren't able to do it.

I don't see how a suspension alternative is a paddling. Those two forms of punishment seem so incompatible to me. Overall I'm a little disturbed that certain schools administer physical, painful punishment.

From what I read it sounds like the school administrators deceived the mother by threatening her with another arrest. Getting suspended from school is different than inexcused absences. Shame on them for putting that kind of pressure on her.

I don't support spanking at all (especially not in schools!!) but if you're going to do it, it should be quick......not drawn out agony like this.

And why oh why did the mother choose to film it?

Lastly, I am amazed that a young-looking principal would choose this as her course of action.

@JoyfulKiwi: my first thought was why would this mother allow it, but you are right, she is obviously in a bad place and probably doesn't understand the rules and thought she would get in worse trouble. Obviously there is a lot more to the story too- why so many absences, for one? And really, spitting at another kid, by a FIVE year old, warrants paddling by school officials??

It's frightening that this is still allowed and done by school officials.

Not okay. Sooooo not okay. I know these laws exist, but I can't believe so many states still have them - why don't they get rid of them already?! And I further can't believe a school would choose to utilize this rule! My mind is blown; how could educators be okay with hitting someone else's child, regardless of "permission"?!
In this specific instance, it sounds like that mother is in a bad place (so many un excused absences, misinformed/misunderstanding the truancy rules) and I'm so disappointed that administrators decided to punish this family instead of try to help them. In my opinion the admins should be fired. They are not doing their job well. (I know it won't happen because this is all "legal")

 :crying: I have no words. I am shocked this is still allowed and freaked out that my state is listed. And why did that little boy miss so much school that the mother was arrested? And how could you choose that for your son over suspension?
