@Foodnerd81: that'd bug me too. It really bothers me if he doesn't try to take care of himself then gets sick and/or gets the kids sick and then I'm supposed to take care of all three, and be sick myself. Thankfully dh has gotten on board for the flu shot this year!

@2littlepumpkins: he only got the flu shot because I bagged him about it for months. He tried to claim he got it at the beginning of January and I was like, "no, you got it in February because I was really upset that you hadn't gotten it by my birthday (end of January) when that was the only thing I asked for. Not like I got a present anyway." I'm just pulling out all the guilt trips today.

I can't stand when my dh has a cold and it's a "mild flu because we got the flu shot but still worse than a cold." Edit to add though he usually "adults" anyway, just not without the drama, lol.

@brady80: yup. He's feeling better already (I think once I got serious about him going to the doctor and finding an urgent care center and everything suddenly he starting feeling better). So annoying. And now the toddler has a fever. So I'm sure they have the same thing and a 2 year old is handling it better.

@cascademom: luckily so far I'm fine, just a little cold. But I'm tired because, you know, I'm a mom. I don't know any drop off care places like that at all. But hopefully I won't get sick! More echinacea and I'll pick up some zinc and elderberry when I get the big baby some cough drops.

Does he have a primary care doctor? Last year I was pretty sure I had the flu and I called my primary care and they didn't want me to come in. They listened to my symptoms and said yup it's the flu, and prescribed me Tamiflu.

I think you basically know when you have the flu - it doesn't feel like a cold. You feel really really sick with a fever and body aches, and it just comes on suddenly. Cold symptoms start gradually. Here's a great site for reference: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/consumer/symptoms.htm

@Foodnerd81: Could you send the kids to a daycare drop off place if the flu/cold gets really bad? I did that on maternity leave when I was literally too sick to care for my infant. It gave me a day of rest to recover. Just a thought.

@Canoli: We've had a brutal cold season. My husband has gone three times to see a doctor at immediate care. It's huge for someone who would fight and fight against going. I'm really proud of him for it. It sucks that we're sick, but his adulting is strong.

@Mrs D: I just think that moms are always thinking they can't take a sick day...but why not? I SAH so obviously during the work day I'm kinda on my own. But in the evening or on weekends I have no qualms saying I don't feel well, I'm going to lie down.
(But in general he's pretty hands on and we do a lot of give and take with tasks and breaks, and taking turns sleeping in, stuff like that - I know other couples where the husband just isn't hands on so I think the "sick day" wouldn't work for the mom).

@Mrs D: I've just started behaving a bit like he does when he's sick. I had a bad cold and cough last week, and I also get headaches just about weekly. So I just decided that when I don't feel well I will say I'm going to rest. And I will nap, read, watch tv, whatever.

Granted we only have one LO and I'm not pregnant. But if he can go take a 4 hour nap when he has a cold, I can take a 2 hour break. Surprisingly he doesn't fight me on it. He agrees!

@Foodnerd81: Yeah, I haven't heard anything about the shots effectiveness this year. But hopefully you'll be able to avoid it. (If it is the flu).

And you're not a jerk! I legit had the flu, test confirmed. My husband of course then was like "I don't feel good either". Went to the same clinic and tested negative. He still insists he had it and I will still to this day tell him he had the man flu. He was no where near the level of illness I was and tested negative. Yet once he felt he had it, even though my symptoms were still worse, I was supposedly less contagious so I had to take over again. I was pissed but there was no use to fighting about it at the time, just had to do what we had to do.
We actually will still get into a fight about it a year later if it comes up. Hahaha.

@SweetiePie: this is good info, thanks. I really want him to be more conscientious about sanitizing himself. I'm cautiously hopeful I won't get it (if it is the flu) and since G is breastfed and only wakes once or twice a night, I pretty much have to take that anyway. But maybe I'll get him some masks. And a bottle of purell.

I got the flu when my son was I think 16 or 18 weeks. We might have been overly cautious but here's what we did:

1) I went to a medexpress clinic right away. They did the rapid test for the flu and confirmed right on the spot that I had it (fwiw I also had the flu shot last year but it was not a very effective shot last year, per the cdc)
2) they prescribed tamiflu. It was actually hard to find and I had to visit a few pharmacies.
3) I scrubbed the crap out of my hands at home and used a lot of hand sanitizer
4) My husband thinks he eventually got it, but before he started to feel sick, he took care of the baby mostly. We really limited my exposure.
5) Once we felt that I was probably less contagious than him (again it wasn't confirmed he had the flu - he actually tested negative - but we wanted to be safe) I took over most of the care.
6) this is where we maybe went overboard, but we were scared - we wore masks! We got the paper ones from the drug store and wore them around him.
7) almost forgot - for the worst of it, we actually hired someone to come and do night wakings. When I felt miserable and was really contagious. Like the first 2-3 days I think. Not sure if that's an option or if any family can help? (This is if you get it too, I guess)
8) we also Lysoled a lot.

@Foodnerd81: you're not a jerk. When my baby was 4 days old I was trying to get him ready for his pediatrician check up and get our older daughter ready for school and my husband just disappeared in to our bathroom. I was FUMING. I stormed in there to ask him why the f he wasn't helping me. Turned out he had an insane case of strep, 103 fever, couldn't stand up, and I had to take him to the ER. Whoops.

I agree with everything that @truth bombs has said. My husband has made a lot of strides with going to the doctor since being married and especially since having kids. He would never go to the doctor before and I would nag and nag and nag (and annoy myself) but since having kids he has gotten much better. I just don't have tolerance for not feeling well and doing nothing about it. I know kids are resilient but jeez I just feel like let's take care of the problem before it gets worse and try to prevent the spread of germs as much as possible. Thinking of you and hoping it's not the flu and he gets over his man cold real soon for your sanity!

@Truth Bombs: yeah the office opens at 9, I'll call myself then. He's moaning about getting all the way there- it is 4 blocks away. I guess the symptoms started weds evening but weren't so severe. Both weds and thurs evenings he felt feverish. So annoying since he had already taken today as a vacation day because I have a midwife and desperately need a break, but now ill be taking care of 3 babies. (I'm a jerk but acting much nicer in real life).

Yes, since it's only the second day of being sick he can get tamiflu which will shorten his illness. But he needs to go today. Otherwise, it will be too late for Tamiflu to be effective. Plus, with a newborn I would want definite confirmation of if I was dealing with the flu or just a dramatic husband.

DH now thinks he might have the flu- he did get the flu shot in early February after I nagged him for 3 months about it. We have an 11 week old at home who is obviously too young for a flu shot. The toddler and I got the flu shot in the fall as recommended.

This is the second day he has been sick. Is there anything a doctor can do at this point? Aside from hand washing anything I can do for the baby?

I have my doubts that it's the actual flu since we all have a cold and the toddler has a nasty cough at this point too. But I'm thinking of forcing him to go to the doctor.
