We were worried about telling DH's parents because we've just moved across the country from them, which they are still getting used to, and didn't know how they'd react realizing they wouldn't be as close to LO as if we'd stayed in NJ. But they were amazing and so happy and congratulatory! It's their first grandchild, so I think that swayed their emotions :)

I don't have a relationship with my mother, but my Aunt and Uncle are for all intents and purposes my parents -- they were beyond excited and there were tears all around :) My aunt said "I can't wait to go shopping!" So cute.

Super nervous about telling my mother...going to wait to do it after 12 weeks when we tell others. It's a really sad and unfortunate situation, but that's life and I'm so blessed to at least have my aunt!

@hellocupcake - The reverse is what I'm expecting - in laws will be super excited, my parents who knows. I just hope they don't make comments like that though. =/

Both sets of my parents were very excited and both my mom and stepmom both already had hunches that we were pregnant the day we announced (despite us trying for almost a year). It was crazy. My sisters were the most excited though. This is their first biological niece/nephew.

My parents: Super excited! Giddy even, which I kind of expected since I had gotten married a year before and they were basically waiting for grand baby news (:

Husband's parents: Not very excited. I think MIL even asked why we weren't using protection. FIL said something like "well, we wish you would have waited but congratulations I guess. " They love her now, but it still annoys me that they weren't excited for us.

both sets of parents were excited but in different ways.

my parents were happy with smiles and congrats (we told them in person). the mellow kind of happiness i was expecting since they already have 2 grandsons living in the same house as them.

his parents were super excited with lots of words of congrats (we told them over the phone). their reaction was more of a surprise to me, especially after my parents' reactions. but makes sense as this will be their first grandchild.

My parents were excited, I think my dad was a bit shell-shocked by the idea since he'd spent 21 years telling me not to get pregnant. Lol but once he remembered that I was a married woman and gainfully employed, self-supporting, etc. he got really excited.

MIL cried. Happy tears and lots of them. DH is 10 years older than me and she was ready for a grandbaby from us.

MIL cried and got really excited. It was so sweet. BIL was so excited - I was shocked at just how happy he was - he went out and got really drunk to celebrate!!!

My mum didn't seem very happy at all. She said she was but she came across quite disinterested. She'd fallen out with DH a few months earlier over something he'd said (she does this with everyone at some point) so her biggest emotion was fear - fear that she wasn't going to be a part of her grandchild's life etc. She's always like this - I fully expected drama. She finally forgave DH Christmas day after five months of refusing to speak to him and has been a lot more positive since!

Dh's mom was super excited! Hugged us and asked a bunch of questions. Very into it

At first, my mom was disappointed because I waited so long to tell her (12 weeks). I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed and hurt by their initial reactions, however. They congratulated us and mom burst into tears, but it quickly turned into "let's tell you how not to mess up this pregnancy so you don't m/c again" and it didn't go over well.

I think my parents will be really excited.

I'm not sure about DHs parents. His mom has said things like "i think we are the only people on earth who don't want to become grandparents!" and one time I told her DH saw a newborn and said "i want one!" and her response was "oh, a baby raising a baby.. wouldn't that be great!" *sarcastic*

I'm sure they will be happy, but would rather we hold off for a while!

MIL and BILs were really excited when we told them in person. It's the first grandchild on that side and MIL was really over the moon. I knew she would be.

FIL was like, Oh, that's great, wow. Not terribly enthusiastic-- like, genuinely happy, but just not that excited. Again, not surprised, it's pretty much how he was when we got engaged. His wife was more excited, though that's an awkward situation since DH can't stand her.

I wasn't sure how my parents would react since they already have 2 young grandchildren who live way closer to them than we do, but they were so excited. We ended up telling everyone at once on facetime on Christmas eve, while everyone was together, and people were all so excited for us. It was nice. I guess I totally have middle child syndrome because I thought they'd be like, oh, yeah, this again. I hope your parents surprise you in a good way!

I think my Mom is going to be very excited. My older siblings already have 8 children between them, but none of them are my Mom's biological grandchildren, so mine will be her first unless my sister is secretly pregnant and beats me to an announcement.

My Dad will be happy for us, but he already has 8 grandchildren crawling all over him for attention so I'm not sure how much he'll be able to give our baby.

My IL's will also be very happy for us, they'd better be at least lol! They shower my BIL's daughters with presents and attention and won't talk about anything else other than the two girls. Their houses are like shrines to his two daughters.

My ILs are nearing retirement and they have been really interested and glowing everytime a baby in the family is around. They are very mild mannered and it is still obvious that they are very ready for us to announce a pregnancy.

On my side, my dad wasn't an involved dad and has even less interest in his grand kids so I have very little hope that he will be too excited, and my mom is passed away. Luckily, my sister is much older and will be happy and be a fill-in aunt-quasi-grandma.

My mom cried, and then immediately started talking about getting maternity insurance. Like is wiping away tears looking up insurance ha! My dad is always grouchy and emotionless & he got teary-eyed and joked around but was excited. My sister was surprisingly "whatever" about it, I was counting on her to be the one who was most excited.

My MIL thought we were joking, and FIL said that he needed a drink haha. My SIL cried her face off, she was thrilled.

@LindsayInNYC: when i got my BFP back in July...i was scared to tell my mom...she has always been the one to tell me to not have kids until we were ready and had spent enough "us" time together...when i finally told her, about 5 days after we found out, she didnt believe me...i had to reconfirm like three times...it wasnt until i started crying that she actually believed that i was pregnant...she was over the moon when she finally believed me and couldnt wait for the baby to come...we unfortunatly had a M/C about a week later...and is now the one to tell us to hurry up already and get pregnant already...my dad was really excited, had a grin from ear to ear...and though my dad passed away almost two months ago...i know that my baby and dad are hanging out together...MIL and FIL, were beyond excited...FIL brought out a round of beer to my BIL's and SIL's when we announced, he actually forgot i couldnt drink and asked if i wanted one...everyone yelled "NO"...it was too funny...

@HelloBeeBoston - Yup, sounds exactly like my parents! My dad was emotional on my wedding day but I don't know if my mom was. She got irritated with me when we got ready that morning (oy). My Dad can be more emotional in the appropriate situations than she is. But I'm basically expecting a similar reaction unfortunately...

@LindsayInNYC: I have a friend with parents that sound a lot like yours. She just found out she's preggo and told her family over the holidays -- her in-laws, pumped. Her parents? she said they basically didn't say much but said, oh, great - or something like that. but she's used to it - she's still totally excited and just expected that from her parents.... we were saying, maybe when the baby arrives it will be different!

@MrsBrewer - DH asked my dad for permission to propose a couple months before he did. We had a long anticipated vacation coming up (first in a LONG time since we were in school and then work made me wait 6 months) and I anticipated a proposal. I assumed my parents would have as well. Well, vacation was Friday to Monday and he waited until Sunday afternoon to propose. I try and call to share the news and no one answered the phone... =/

I knew that Hubs parents would be excited because they've been bugging us to have kids for a while, but I didn't know how my own parents would react. True to form, Hubs mom and step-mom started crying when we told them and blubbering about babies.

My mom's response: "Are you kidding me???" She was totally happy though - she just had thought she was never going to be a grandparent at this point, haha. And my dad seemed pretty ambivalent, but he's not super expressive, so that was to be expected. They're both helping me paint the nursery though and have bought our crib and a rocking chair, so I know they must be into it!
