It would really annoy me and I would definitely stand a good distance away. Not sure if I would say anything though.

It can't hurt to look up the laws in your area - some towns near me have made it illegal to smoke within a certain distance of children waiting for a bus.

@Anagram: really?? I see parents smoking near their kids constantly! The one that takes tHe cake is when I made a stop at the hospital and saw a new mom in her hospital gown outside smoking while holding her newborn baby. I'm shocked they even let her leave the mom baby floor.

I'd be annoyed and stand far away too. I've been using the pregnancy excuse lately and people have been accommodating. I encounter a lot of people in my job who smoke, and thankfully my company policy is that we don't allow patients to smoke while we visit them, of course I still smell it in their homes. But I'm thankful I can hide behind a policy.

When it's in public, I do my best to avoid smokers

It would annoy me, but I wouldn't say anything. I'd just try to stand upwind and not too close. It's outside, so it should dissapate quickly.

I'd be annoyed. Is it weird that it makes it harder for me to say something since it sounds like he's a nice guy?! :) I'm much more likely to tell someone off if they seem rude/crappy.

How long are you guys at the bus stop for? It seems weird that he can't wait (what like max of 20 mins?) to smoke?

I'd be a little bothered, but it's outside so hopefully most of the smoke dissipates by the time it gets to you. I do hope he doesn't smoke in his house though.

It would bother me, but because he is outside I wouldn't ask him to stop smoking. Instead, I would move and if needed explain to my kid why we are moving. Sometimes smokers are oblivious as to which direction their smoke blows.

There's an older woman that smokes on a bench outside of our building sometimes, and it never occurred to me to complain. When I'm with the kids, I just use the back entrance or I walk past really quickly, limiting the exposure to about 2 seconds. But this made me wonder...

So I googled and found this article. Apparently if you are within 2 feet of a smoker outside, you are being exposed to second hand smoke toxins, the same as if you were indoors. But if you are 6 feet away or more, your risk is pretty low.

So, I would just stay far away from the dad if you don't want to bring it up. It's sad that he smokes around his own kids anyway. I saw a man smoking while pushing his 1 year old girl in a stroller in my town the other day, and I was so jarred because I don't think I've ever seen a parent smoking with their babies nearby in my town. It was weird, because he was sort of trying to hide the cigarette, but unsuccessfully because he was also pushing a stroller--like he was afraid someone was going to chastise him.

eta: this article http://news.stanford.edu/news/2007/may9/smoking-050907.html

I would very nicely say that the smoke bothers me (it does I have asthma) and my son is prone to breathing problems and could he please refrain from smoking near us.

I mean seriously it's 10 minutes of the day and you're around little kids. It may be legal but it's pretty disgusting and disrespectful.

I would say something. I'm kind of a mama bear about things like secondhand smoke and if it's going to be happening really regularly I would feel worse for not saying anything. I'd be super nice of course but this dad can find another time to smoke! What if other kids have asthma?

It would bug me but he's well within his rights to smoke outside unless there's an ordinance that indicates smoking isn't allowed within X feet of a bus stop.

I would be passive aggressive and stand super far back. If he asks why, I would say the cigarette smoke

I'd just stand up wind from him and call it a day. It's an open air outdoor space, the pollution being caused by all the cars on the road are probably just as bad, and he's not breaking any rules.

It would bother me, but I don't think you can really say anything, as he is outside and well not blowing it as you said in the kids faces. I feel like a designated "Bus stop" could possibly have rules, maybe look up your districts site and check?
If that is the case then make someone aware, if there are rules, and smoking is one!

I'm not even sure which board to put this on...

My daughter rides the bus to school 3 days a week. Most of those days, a father with several children is the only other parent at the bus stop. He lives a few houses down from us. He's very friendly and chatty and his kids are friendly, but most of those mornings, he's smoking at the bus stop. DH has been at the bus stop before when it's happened, and he says, "Well, he's not blowing smoke in the kids' faces, or standing right on top of them," but it's still cigarette smoke and the wind still blows it to where we can smell it. Since he's usually the only other parent at the stop, I can't really avoid him, and he's perfectly nice in every other way. Would this bother you? Would you say something? I don't want to make the rest of the school year awkward but I also don't want to breathe (and don't want my kids to breathe!) his stinky smoke the rest of the year!
