I would peek at my presents every year and they never got taken away. Hell, since I'm not going to be home for Christmas my Mom mailed my gifts to me and specifically said don't open until Christmas...and I STILL peak! lol I just have no willpower. I could never see myself returning a gift because a kid peeked. And honestly, my Mom asked me today if I looked at my gifts early and I lied and said no. Peeking has always been part of the fun of Christmas for me! lol

It's the lying to me not the finding or the opening of the gift. To me, the lying needs to be punished. I respect how you're doing it, I was just commenting that that solution would not be one that I would feel comfortable using myself.

@runsyellowlites: btw, we opened wrapped gifts too. just opened the end of it so we could see the box and then closed it back. i think if he found it, it's one thing, but he lied about it and that's what he should be punished for. =( i'm sure he'll learn his lesson and it won't happen again!

Okay... I get the whole finding your gifts thing BUT what about OPENING THEM?

Because that's what DS did. The gift wasn't "hidden" un-wrapped If was already out with the rest of the gifts.

That's what my sis and I did too... we actually went through and opened all of our gifts & I'm pretty sure that's why we lost them. Totally different than me not hiding them well enough. And least I would think so. lol

I used to peek and my parents just found a better hiding place. I didn't get in trouble for it.

@venice4504: I guess since that's how me doing it was handled and it stopped me from peeking again we thought it was a good thing to do. It's ultimately about trust for us. We shouldn't have to worry about him doing something he knows he shouldn't just because we aren't in the room. I guess that and neither DH and I thought that gifts were a "deserved" thing but a privilege growing up so we treated it as so. *shrugs shoulders*

He still has plenty of gifts that's for sure and still has 4 more nights of getting them. yay! =)

I guess I don't understand why it's being taken back. I've peeked at gifts before and while shame on me for ruining the surprise the gift was bought already and I still got it. I feel personally that the lying is an issue but not one that I would punish with taking back a gift.

@Rosie Girl: If he would've "found" it then we would've totally given it to him! That would've been a shame on me moment. Unfortunately this gift was already wrapped in tissue paper & in a bag with more tissue paper (I made sure you couldn't see through the dark blue paper so as not to ruin the surprise) & out with the other gifts so he actually took it out to looked at it... and then lied about it. =/

I never found my presents, but even if I did, I think my parents would have given them to me. It would have been my fault if it wasn't a surprise because I peeked.

DS found one of his presents, but we are still giving it to him. I should have hid it better if I didn't want him peeking.

@tequiero21: My parents would've been none the wiser other than my sis used a little too much tape on the gifts when we re-wrapped them. Sheesh! Guess that's to be expected from a 7 year old. We never peeked again though. lol

we used to peek, but i really think my parents were unaware. if they were, they didn't let us know and we never got punished. i remember that 1 year i first started looking for it - it was when i realized there was no santa.

Today marked a sad day for both DH and I. With tonight being night 4 of Hanukkah we had to not give DS his gift b/c not only did he "peek" at it BUT he lied about it.

He has been distraught all day since finally fessing up and I think it's been just as hard on DH and I as it has been him! It was actually the #1 gift that WE had been wanting to give him.... seriously, I was SOOOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to THAT gift.

Ugh! We totally hated doing it, but feel that even though it STUNK we felt it was the right disciplinary action for his lying and peeking. When I told my mom about the incident she said "Welcome to the wonderful world of Christmas time and kids"

lol grrrrr....

Funny thing is my sister and I did the SAME THING when we were his age... only we opened ALL the gifts! And then of course re-wrapped them. Still, we got caught and that was one of the gloomiest Christmas' ever! lol

So did anyone here ever lose any of their gifts for peeking early?
