If suspected HFM, I'd keep them home. I got it from my son before he showed any symptoms just last week.

I don't think so, I think it's probably the more considerate/safe choice, BUT I wouldn't come to expect that as a host or fellow guest. I'd probably swing back and forth from both positions as circumstances change.

My initial instinct was to say, *definitely* keep home.

But I imagine if the question had been, should I keep a sibling home from school even if she is showing no symptoms, the answers would have been strongly the opposite. Even though it's not as if you are less contagious at school. And in some schools, this might not even be allowed if you're exceeding some limited number of absences without a doctor's note.

So as a party-goer, I would be very appreciative. But I can see it going either way depending on the circumstances....

@Corduroy: for a cold I would send, for hfm I would keep home. Not sure on the stomach bug. Sometimes it's hard to tell with certain kids if it's a bug or something just not agreeing, etc.

I'd keep both home in this instance. I'm sure your neighbors appreciate it!!

I have 3 kids and I swear one or the other is always sick, I would send a healthy one if one of the other 2 were sick - only because if I didn’t we would never go to any parties 😂

With HFM I’d keep all of the kids home, the same with a gastro / vomiting bug.

I actually refused to visit my MILs once because my SIL’s kids had HFM and my MIL babysits 2x a week. We canceled dinner and rescheduled for like two weeks later. We do see them once a month so it wasn’t a major deal, but my ILs weren’t even sick. So they thought it was kind of weird.

Thanks for the validation. The host and some of the guests were encouraging us to send DD over so I was wondering if I was being too harsh.

It is really hot here and we don't have AC so we've been hearing (and can still hear the party) through our open windows. Fortunately the kids don't know what they're missing and DD didn't ask to go outside this afternoon.

@crazydoglady: My LOs (6 months and 3 years old at the time) got HFM from a friend whose child never got more than one tiny sore (she actually asked me if I thought it was a cold sore and we both looked at it, and I never would have guessed HFM.) I don't blame her at all, but I'm still slightly bitter. It was so, so terrible.

@Jess1483: This.

You are absolutely right to keep the other child home. If it are a cold, then whatever, but my son got HFM from a party and it was AWFUL. I had to miss a week and half of work, my son was miserable, and he had to miss two weeks of daycare. I don't think someone's presence at a party is worth that.

I know this sounds negative...I'm actually agreeing with you! I'm just still bitter that someone took their kid with HFM to a party.

If I thought it was HFM, I'd definitely keep the other kid home. With a cold or maybe even a stomach bug, I'd probably let symptom-free kiddos go. But HFM is so, so contagious. And miserable.

Would you let the other one go to a party?

DS, 4yo, seems to have HFM or something equally bothersome with sores in the mouth. Our family was invited to a neighbors house for a water play party with a bunch of girls from DD 6yo class.

When I thought DS just had a run of the mill cold I was going to take DD but when I figured out DS was seriously miserable I decided to keep DD home as well in case she's got his germs. At this point she has no signs of illness but the two kids snuggle and share stuff (despite my warnings) quite often.

Is my self imposed quarantine too severe?
