That is awful. I know of someone who had their child steal a diaper bag from a mall kiosk. I was so disgusted after hearing about it! The kid was only 7 or 8. The bag was even monogrammed with a random name!

it's so sad! a lot of ppl use their kids to steal because until you're over the age of 7 you can't commit be charged with a crime, at least i believe that is the law around here.

He couldn't use force but he could confront someone and take the stuff back and call the police. For a pair of shoes, the paperwork wouldn't have been worth it. The people who do this regularly keep the crimes small in dollar value

I worked in the mall my senior year of high school. The day after 9/11 the whole place was empty. I mean, no one felt like shopping, so we had virtually no customers. A young girl with a baby in a stroller came into the store, and proceeded to stuff as many things as she could into her diaper bag. We saw her, called her out on it, and she turned and ran with the stroller and stolen items. The guy I was working with, called the cops while chasing her and they grabbed her outside. She was 16, and had been arrested multiple times for shoplifting with her kid. She had picked over a bunch of stores that day. Who steals with get child the day after 9/11?!

@Mrs. Pen: The only option homeless people have is to stand around begging for money all day? No. I've watched two parents and their kids standing there numerous times when I've gone to Costco. One of the adults at least couldn't take the kids to a park? Or one of them can't go volunteer their time at a food bank for just 2 short hours to get food for their family? One can't go look for work? One can't go out there looking for resources? Maybe it's just where I live, but there are sooo many available resources out there for families in need. Instead of just standing around all day, at least one of those parents should go out and try to take advantage of those resources.

I worked for Victoria's Secret and they don't prosecute, so we werent allowed to do anything, like @Mrs. Pen: said. We saw the "professionals" come in with kids all the time. They'd have the kids steal things, have the kids create a distraction so they could steal, etc. Once we got a little more power from the company, we found ways to deny them returning merchandise if we knew it was stolen. We had a couple instances where they would find teenage girls in the mall and con them into buying the merchandise from them by telling them they could return it for more. (Like, here's a bag of bras. You give me $40 and then you can go return them for whatever you want in the store.)

It's disgusting. I wish you could call CPS on people for shady crap like that.

@softcream: I worked in retail and legally we could do NOTHING. We couldn't hold/detain them, we couldn't blatantly accuse them of shoplifting (even if we knew they did it), we couldn't go through their bag and we couldn't follow them out of the store. Crazy right?! Our only option was to call mall security. That's why my company stressed amazing customer service so much: employees who are constantly tending to the needs of the customers supposedly keeps people from stealing.

@blackbird: how did he stop them? i assume it's usually safer not to use any force. which is why i'm guessing the stride rite guy just stood behind the car, instead of yelling at the mom or something more active.

We were in Stride Rite today and a woman had her daughter put on a pair of boots from the store and then they just strolled right out. They left her old sneakers in the store so it was pretty clear what happened. Her old shoes weren't even in bad shape. One of the employees followed them out right away to their car. They got into the car and the guy stood in back of their car for a really long time, trying to block them. But eventually, she started backing up and he moved out of the way. Then they drove off. He came back in the store, very angry, but I'm not sure if he was even going to call the police.

Anyway, it was so sad to see that this mom was teaching her daughter, about age 8 or 9, to steal.
