This is one reason why I prefer the back up cameras that are on the rear view mirror rather than on a separate screen. I feel like it makes you use more than just the back up camera

@LemonJack: yeah I agree with you about being able to see little things tucked behind the trunk (like a kid or a dog). The camera would be helpful for that.
What I don't love is they give you no information about vehicles or people approaching from the sides. Your field of vision is basically limited backwards and maybe 15 degrees to either side. That's fine for avoiding hitting something behind you, but not cars pulling out at a diagonal to you, or cars driving by from either side. (And by you, im not directing my comment at you lemon jack. I'm just piggybacking on my original post)

I can see more on my backup camera than if I turned and looked out. I still use my side mirrors, though. But, the camera can definitely become a crutch and I think people forget it's not the only thing you should be paying attention to!

That's scary! We have a backup camera in the car my husband primarily drives, and I still always look over my shoulders! What I do really like about the backup cameras are how you can see all the way to the ground. I'm always paranoid about little kids!

Ha, I'm one of those awful people that only uses the camera. In my defense, my car is super tough to see out of and the only thing that helps is the camera. I also go only like 2mph when I back up. My dad used to have the same car as I do (without a backup cam) and he used to need my mom to get out behind him to help him back out of the garage at their condo. He got rid of it because the damn thing is so hard to see out of.

@Littlebit7: I can turn mine off in my Outback. It actually shows in my rear view mirror instead of the dash so that might have something to do with it.

@Littlebit7: it's not a replacement for looking, but it really is super helpful for parking so I would never want to turn mine off! I guess I would get used to it but it makes backing into parking spaces so much easier.

Honestly, I think it depends.
With my previous, standard back up camera, I definitely turned around and used my mirrors, only using the camera as a check to make sure no one/ nothing was directly behind my SUV (where you literally cannot see a short person or child standing without the camera).

But on my new SUV, the screen shows a surround view, based on multiple cameras, including side views from the bumper. This is actually a MUCH better view than I can get myself, therefore I watch the camera more closely now since the screen shows cars coming all the way down the aisle.

I do think backup cameras are a necessity in vehicles with poor rear visibility. But standard backup cameras are of course not a replacement for checking all around the vehicle. People need to understand the limits of the technology they are using.

We have a backup camera and don't use it. There is no substitute for looking where you're going! If you can't see out of your car to backup, it seems like the car might not be safe to drive. Also, the camera becomes occluded when fogged over or it is rainy or snowy outside so it's not really very useful.

Omg this is a deep pet peeve of mine. DH depends on his camera so much and I always yell at him about it. I always look behind me and use my mirrors and check my camera last just in case there's like a toddler hiding behind my bumper at daycare. I am always telling DH he's going to mow someone over and then I'm going to set him on fire. :meh:

I actually got hit by a car last week that was backing up. He was in a Lexus SUV and was using his camera instead of looking. I was in a crosswalk on a one way street so I didn't look right since there shouldn't have been any cars backing down the street, but he was parked illegally and needed to get out I guess. I feel like one problem, at least here in the Northeast is that the cameras are filthy with salt and sand and yuck right now.... The guy didn't even apologize for hitting a 29 week pregnant woman with his car. Thanks dude. I'm fine.

@caterw: Ditto. I'm probably the slowest backer-upper ever. And I'm a maniac checking every possible angle. I've nearly been hit too many times to count by people speeding through parking lots or not looking. My car is dwarfed by massive SUVs so people have a hard time seeing me as I'm backing out. I keep my car top carrier on my car most of the time partly to help people see me!

Totally not alone. I went To a grocery store just before Christmas, and a lady backed right into my car as I was driving down the aisle. She flat out told me, "I had my back up camera on, and I didn't see you." No checking the mirrors or blind spots at all. She took off my passenger side mirror and smashed in the door. I was just glad that my toddler was home with dad when it happened.

I don't think it's a substitute, especially for the SIDE view mirrors, but - and I understand this may not be a popular view - I actually see out the back better with the camera than my naked eyes. My naked eyes can't see a pedestrian off to the side either, and I think a lot of pedestrians really aren't paying attention. Obviously it's on the driver to watch out in the end, but it benefits everyone if pedestrians don't assume that all drivers can see them even when they step out last second. I feel like I've seen a lot of close calls in Target! None with stationary vehicles or pedestrians though.

I have to admit- I have back issues sometimes and it's hard for me to twist enough to see out the back for long. So I do use the camera a lot- but first I look all around the car and in the mirrors. But when I'm actually doing the backing up I feel I can see better with the camera.
