@Mrs D: What did you end up deciding for pay and benefits? Our babysitter started yesterday. She's young, so there might be a learning curve, BUT our former nanny (who is amazing) is now watching a girl my daughter's same age, so our former nanny and current babysitter are planning to do school pickup together every day and hang out a lot, so the older girls have a playmate. They all went to the park together yesterday after the first day of school.

Our babysitter is going to be working 18 hours a week for us, and we are going to guarantee 18 hours a week (whether we use her on a particular day or not), but not pay sick days/any vacation she requests. Meaning if I don't need her, I'll pay her.....but if she requests off, I won't). There was such a wide variety for what people in my town do for part timers, that I just asked her what she was expecting and we came to an agreement.

Hmmm...so this all has me thinking...

Maybe the real discussion on wage is will we pay by actual hours and not guaruntee them necessarily (i.e. not pay for vacation, sick days, etc) at a higher rate OR offer set hours/pay at a lower rate.

Its really 1 hour of pickup, and 1 hour of sitting at the house. I plan to prep activities for them for most days - and I'm presuming that DD1 may have some school work.

@ShootingStar: I dont think I am quite ready to handle my barely 5 year old taking the bus...scares the crap out of me...

This will be our third year with a part time nanny. The only difference for us is that it's morning but it's like 12-15 hours a week. We have paid hourly with each person (now the 3rd...only because they keep moving after a year!). We typically don't pay anytime they don't work or the kids have vacation, etc. and our nannies have been totally fine with it. We also only have them during the school year. We pay somewhat generously and always round up and give holiday gifts, but we don't do sick leave or vacation time at all and I truly believe it's worked for each of us. With a part-time job it's extra income... (we pay $15, one kid...a lot of the time is just light housekeeping)

I did this as a freshly married college senior for a year. I was also available for them on holidays. They paid me when they went on vacation or took days off to spend with him. I was paid $12/hr 10 years ago. I picked him up from the bus stop. I took him to haircuts, cooking classes, classes at the little gym etc.

I think we just hired someone for a similar job. We let our full time nanny go because our youngest is two and is starting daycare. But I needed some kind of aftercare for LO1 and I also didn't want to do two separate pickups, so I interviewed a couple of people to pick LO 1 up from school, walk her home and give her snacks, etc. and also keep our 2 year old home 1 full day, so she'd have a brief overlap with both kids That one day a week.

Hours are 2:30-4:30 for 1 kid, plus 1 full day of 9 hours. She is a college student with morning classes 4 days a week so this works for her.

I asked some friends for advice on part time nannies (pay and benefits) and the answers were so divergent. Some friends told me you have to pay more for part time (higher hourly rate), some told me even part time sitters get the same benefits as full time sitters; others told me a college student would not expect any benefits only hourly pay, and they told me a much lower going rate.

In the end, I asked the girl what she expected to make and she told us her current family was only paying $13 an hour, hourly rate no benefits, (that is super low in our town! Super low)so we happily offerred to pay a smudge more so we got a deal and she got a raise. Win win

@LBee: She did mention that she'd be happy to start dinner some nights so long as it was hands off (turn on a crock pot, put a dish in the oven, etc.) - which is amazing.

She is a teacher at our school, and always works the morning shift (6:30am-1/2pmish) - so it works great with her existing job. It is essentially supplemental income to her. As I understand she does drop offs for some parents occasionally (1-2 nights a week)...of course she'd be giving up her ability to do that coming to work for us. Though, most nights she could totally still sit for someone for a date night - thered be no issue with her being somewhere by 6:30 or 7.

I wonder if she would consider the fact that while I say 3-6pm, I cant imagine she would really be there beyond 5:30 most days...a lot of days it may even be 5pm. I just think its better to have the range set in stone to protect ourselves...and remove the guessing game.

I assumed there is a chance she would want $12 maybe even $15 per hour. It would still be a positive cashflow swing for us...Latchkey will cost us $27/day for the kiddos both.

We have a part-time nanny. We pay more than that, but we are in different areas (although I'm not in a high COLA). We pay our babysitters $12 and our nanny nets $15. While the consistent hours are nice for her I'm sure, I will say that we pay more because it's not a full time gig (and she works 2 full days for us so she can work a normal gig 3 other days). You also need to consider will she start dinner, etc.

DD1 will start kindergarten next fall (2018) - her program will run from 9:05am-3:55pm.

We think we will also move DD2 (she will be 2,5 at that point) to the "public" pre-school. That program will run from 9am-3pm.

I have mentioned to DH that I think our best bet is to find a PM nanny. He is very apprehensive. We have plenty of teachers from daycare but very few - really only 1 - who we trust to drive our girls around.

Here's the good news...I have casually made comments to that 1 person we are comfortable with and she is interested. She suggested we meet and discuss it. I should note - she has become a good friend of mine.

So - basically it would be 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Say 3pm-6pm. She'd pick up both girls, then bring them home. My initial thought is that it would just be a flat fee...we pay her $10/hr to sit for our girls now. So we'd pay her $150 a week - regardless of our vacation. Some of my thoughts:

*I do think if she were to take a whole week off perhaps we would not pay her that week?
*I also figure we'd need to discuss gas...maybe a tank of gas bi weekly.
*We'd provide car seats.
*Sick days, within reason

Any other bee's have experience with this? Are my thoughts reasonable? I know the $10/hour rate is good - I figure with guaranteed hours she'd still be fine with that rate since it guaranteed work...or do you think she'll want more?

My biggest concern is poor DD2 - she'll be in the car from 3:10 or so until 3:55 when they can collect DD1. The schools are about 10 mins apart. I guess on nice enough days DD2 can just play on the playground while they wait for DD1.
