I emailed the other mom she sits for to see how she has been handling these things, since our nanny has been with her much longer. Thought it would be good to be on the same page, though I did feel weird because it felt a little personal to ask about money and our shared nanny.

Personally, for this particular holiday, I would either offer for her to work the day or give her the day off and pay her for it. I don't think you have to give her the day off, but since it is a day that she has built in to her schedule, I do think the right thing to do would be to pay her for it if you give her the day off (since she may be counting on the $$).

@miranlee: Not all businesses are closed Friday! SO is a programmer and has to work!

Do you need her Friday? or no, because you guys are off?
I wouldnt pay someone in a nanny job for black friday, but I would maybe give a $30 grocery store gift card so she can get a turkey, etc.

The holidays I would consider giving PTO to a nanny for would be Christmas Eve and Day, New Years Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Independence Day.
And only if she was scheduled that day anyway.

She comes in Tuesday and Friday and works for another family on the other days. Since all non-retail businesses are closed on Friday, I assumed that she would get a paid day off. Sounds like that's not necessarily true, though, for a part time situation.

We have a sitter one day a week so of it falls on a holiday I offer to have her come a different day. I also think for Xmas getting the nanny a gift (like a gift card or something) is a very nice gesture.

When I was a full time nanny I did not get PTO, but when I needed a day off they were good about giving it to me and always gave me a gift for Xmas and my birthday.

I'm assuming she works like Tuesday and Thursdays but obviously won't work next Thursday because its thanksgiving?

Since it was just set up, I think I would offer to pay for Thanksgiving, but set up an agreement that going forward, since she is part time, holidays will not be PTO.

Does she work the same two days every week? If so, I would pay only if the holiday happended to fall on the day she normally works

I was switched to PT after being FT And my holidays and PTO benefits went out the window it wasn't talked about at all and that was a little maddening and awkward.

Generally if she doesn't work the holiday, she doesn't get paid for it. I would still offer PTO in general though, and sick days as well.

At a PT nanny I didn't get paid sick or PTO and that was a little disappointing since I'd been with them for so long.

We have a part-time nanny that comes in 2 full days a week and I'm wondering what you guys do when it comes to working/paying for holidays. She and I never discussed this, because she only started 2 weeks ago and it felt like we were still in the trial stage of things. Also, since she only comes in for 2 days, it feels more like she is a babysitter than a nanny.

With that said, she is great and I'm more concerned with keeping our relationship in a good place and want to do the right thing.

So, with the four day Thanksgiving wknd coming up, I'm wondering whether your nanny still works and if s/he doesn't whether you still pay for the day. Moving forward, I will set up a clear schedule for these things, but I wanted to gauge what the norm is before discussing with her.

Thanks! this community is such a wealth of knowledge and support!
