Serve a meal but keep it light and people will leave. Think of it as food people can eat while standing up with a fork or their hands. Pasta salad, a croissant sandwich platter from Costco, veggies and hummus, a heavier hot dip like spinach artichoke in the crockpot, fruit salad, etc.

Oh boo. Fine, I'll do lunch! Maybe just some crockpot BBQ. And, @Mamaof2: I do want them to leave early, haha! My parents will be visiting from across the country and I would rather see them than host my IL extended family all afternoon. And it will be naptime!

Agree with the lunch--there are so many cheap ways to do it. Something in the crock pot before church, or catered sandwiches and supermarket sides (potato salad, that type of thing). Add in a cheese tray, some hummus and pita triangles and carrot sticks and celery, maybe a fruit salad and call it a day.

I think the only way you can get out of serving a meal, is if your guests will eat beforehand and I'm sure no one is having lunch at 10:00 before they go to church. Make it easy stuff. Rollups, fruit platters, veggie platters, salads. But people will be hungry.

Yeah, you need to serve food. Most of the baptisms I've been to later have been about that time and they have either served something they could make ahead and just throw in the oven to warm up (lasagna/king ranch chicken casserole) or had food delivered right when the party started (pizza, etc.)

Is there a good BBQ or Italian place on the way home from church? You could preorder and pick it up on the way home.

Yup, I agree, church always made me hungry. @yoursilverlining: this a great idea. You could also call in advance and have pizza del ivw at a specific time. Sub shops will also do those huge subs on a piece of wood that someone could pick up on the way home from the event?

I'm always starving after church. Lunch would be better. Or, tell people to meet at your house around 3 for the snacks.

Unfortunately, i agree that lunch should be served. I was recently at a party from 11 to 1, and it was mostly snack-like food -- i was hungry! Sandwiches are easy to do, or even cold cuts, cheese and spreads to allow guests to make their own sandwiches.

I think you’re obligated to offer some food at that hour. You could go super easy and just make ahead a couple of cold pasta salads and lay out a sandwich spread with cheeses and meats and toppings and then a basket of different breads to choose from. You could also do a couple of chicken salads and a seafood or ham salad and then just take those out of the fridge when you get home.

Alternatively, you could do something in the crockpot like pulled pork, or soup.

It depends, is the crowd all adults, or are there a lot of kids? If it's just me and my husband, we'd be fine, but if my son were coming, I'd need to have him eat something.

No, you need to offer some real food. Sandwiches or roll ups (I want to try these out: http://www.letsdishrecipes.com/2015/03/italian-sub-sandwich-tortilla-pinwheels.html), meat and cheese tray....you need something more substantial than crackers, cake and punch!

I think a meal is required at that time. If I were going at that time I'd be starving, especially if I also went to the mass. Maybe something simple like sandwich tray, fruit and cheese tray, chips/dip.

Not a birthday party, but my LO2 is going to get baptized the week after Easter. Mass is at 10:30, and so we would be done around 12-12:30 (we have Father Talksalot, haha).

I'm planning on just having people over to the house afterwards. But I don't want to offer a whole meal. I just want to keep it light and easy.

Is it okay just to offer cake and punch, even though it is around lunch time? And maybe cheese and crackers? (No nuts, LO1 is allergic). Or am I obligated to offer lunch?
