I wouldn't go, and I would "make" your DH stay home. I "let" DH go out to NYE without me last year (preggo at 8ish weeks) and it was AWFUL.

after that, NYE will always be celebrated together.

I don't think one night would do you and the baby any harm, but I personally would not be able to relax and enjoy myself in that environment. Also keep in mind that first trimester fatigue... You may not even be able to stay up till midnight at that point!

Ugh cigarette smoke was literally the only thing that made me want to vomit in the first trimester. Besides the health risks, I wouldn't go for that reason alone.

I won't even go into my own father's house for an extended period of time because he smokes in the house.

Even if I knew for sure that it wouldn't harm the baby, I still wouldn't go. I don't know about you, but my sense of smell is magnified like 1000% (that is how it feels at least!) and I don't enjoy the smell of smoke when I am not pregnant. Being around that much smoke while pregnant would probably make me vomit.

I wouldn't go- not so much for the health risks, but more in that I don't tolerate the smell of cigarette smoke very well- it gives me migraines normally, and during pregnancy it made me super nauseous.

I had a (adult) student that was a heavy smoker, and I just could not be in the same room with her without getting sick. She would have to Febreeze the heck out of herself just so I could interact with her without running for the toilet.

I would not go. My hubs is also frustrating when it comes to smoking because his whole family smokes. If it were anyone else he would never want baby around smoke but with his family he feels bad hurting their feelings. My in laws are here right now and earlier I took the baby from MIL and I could smell lingering smoke on the baby. I went in another room and cried a little.

I was in a car with someone smoking out the window for less than 15 mins before I found out I was pregnant. I was paranoid during my whole first trimester because of it! Yeh, I would avoid that party like the plague!

I do not think you overreacted at all.

I wouldn't go. I can't even stand being around people who are smoking one cigarette remotely close to me outdoors. It would really bother me being in a room full of it all night. I think you're well within your rights not to go, and if DH doesn't understand, that's his problem!

@Arden: DH's argument, when I told him about studies such as this, was "what counts as exposure to smoke?". These studies, he said, are conducted with subjects who endure repeated exposure to smoke, not just on one occasion. He's so frustrating because he likes to "debate" everything - even if he agrees with me.

At the end of the day, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's a bad idea. My baby gets his/her oxygen from me, which is already is short supply due to my asthma. To dilute it further, as well as fill the poor (developing) thing with all those other chemicals, is just wrong, I think,. This study emphasises that for me. Thank you.

"Nonsmoking women who breathe secondhand tobacco smoke during pregnancy increase their risk of stillbirth, major birth defects, and other harms to their babies, according to a meta-analysis."

Your "mother's intuition" is right.

I went to a bar where they allow smoking but it wasn't a thick fog of it. It was a two story bar so the smoke kinda rose.

I 100% agree with not going but the odds are it would not hurt anything in the long run. It's one night and its not like you are smoking.

Earlier today, I broached the subject of New Years Eve with DH. Every year, we go to a party at his best friend's house. I love his friend - he introduced us and was best man at our wedding - and I love his parties but for one thing: The Fog.

Best Man is a confirmed bachelor and lives with a bunch of other guys in a shared house in which they all smoke. When they have parties, somewhere around thirty people will be in this house most of whom will be smoking - the air is thick with it. It bothers me at the best of times, being asthmatic, but I try not to be a party pooper and nip off to the bathroom with my inhaler whenever it gets too much.

Anyway, this year, I will be 10 weeks pregnant and so I definitely don't want to be breathing in all that smoke, all night. Long story short, there was an, erm, heated discussion - DH clearly thinks I'm being over dramatic about it; he feels that as it is just one night it isn't going to do the baby any harm.

I'm 100% not going to the party. The end. But I am interested to know what your take on it is - am I being over the top? Would you go??
